Strange problem ... 98 Suburbn, 6.5TD

Recommended Posts

Readership,

Just read of a strange problem with a newer,

98 GMC Suburbn w/6.5TD ... computer controlled

diesel injectors ... on the Diesel Page BBS ...

When the vehicle is parked with wheels up against

a curb ... back or front ... depression of the

accel pedal does "naught" ... vehicle will not move

either back or front ...

Owner has taken it to several GMC/Chev dealers ... tests

have been ?applied? ... all to naught ... one dealer even

suggested its' a "Feature" of the vehicle ...

Once the vehicle is -moving- ( rolling ) all seems well ..

Any thots as to a probable cause ???

Email me if you have a good one ... the vehicle owner

seems to be experiencing " dealer_dropout "

Thanks a much,

Ed in northern VA

Readership,

Below, a 'snip' from the "nogo" vehicle owner ...

thot his "words" mite add a bit.

Ed in VA yet again ...

BEGIN QUOTE(snip) ....

My son and I just bought a 1998 Chevy Turbo Diesel. Have no previous experience with diesels.

My question: When the front or rear wheels are stopped dead against a curb, it

won't accelerate (rpms will not increase; accelerator has no effect; continues

idling); will not climb over the curb. Same behavior with foot on brake or if

attempting to pull a dead weight.

A Chevy dealer service manager in xxxxx City, FL, and another in yyyyyyyy, GA,

assured us this was normal. xxxxx City service manager said he called the

diesel hotline and was told the engine is so powerful that it would damage the

transmission without this safety feature. The technician in xxxxx City

connected his diagnostic equipment and concluded the truck had no problem,

except it needed timing set (which he ostensibly did). The service technician

in yyyyyyyy performed a 72-point check and said he found no problem.

If it's normal, how can I pull a trailer up-hill from a full stop? If it's

normal, why have several mechanics I've talked to heard nothing about it?

Can't find any reference to this behavior in the owner's manual or on any

websites I've visited. Will appreciate any help

Again, email if you've an idea.
