Rear end went out

1997 GMC YUKON 5.7L 4x4 4dr

In my previous post I discussed a whining noise from the rear end, and my suspicions were correct. While driving home from work the rear became unbearably loud and I could feel the gears grinding. I also noticed it felt like it was gearing down hard when I came up to red lights and stop signs. Is that normal when the rear goes? I would hate to think that the tranny is going too.

Now should I just find a good salvage rear end, or try to rebuild?

Anyone have a ballpark range of a salvage vs. rebuild

Thank you in advance

Nothing is normal when the rear goes. It's impossible to say what you'll experience. If you fix it yourself, it might be cheaper than a salvage yard rear, but that's also hard to say for sure.

Yup...Nooooo telling.

I had one go on my '81 Silverado...No warning whatsoever. Just BOOM, then hard parts and gear oil spread all over the road.
