Low front airdam clearance

Looking at the GMT900 Silverado/Sierra 1500, I'm amazed at the low front airdam ground clearance. It looks like about 3-4 inches given up to allow a more streamlined chassis for wind resistance, compared to the earlier model.

Unfortunately, the airdam looks like it is fair game for most smaller offroad or snowpack obstacles. The recent GM ad (Nov 27 Monday Night Football) showed a simple offroad trek that just about crunched the airdam on each mild jounce.

The good (?) news is that the airdam appears to be in two sections, with the lower 3 inches detachable from the upper section (with two side bolts and hopefully a simple series of tabs/slots across the front section. I'd gladly sacrifice a bit of chassis wind resistance for 3 inches more ground clearance. The fallback solution is a good hacksaw.

Thoughts, anyone?

It's removable. Mine is already off on the GMT-900 Sierra Z71 I bought. It removes the same way the 05 -07 classics do.

There is no noticable drawback in terms of mileage/wind resistance. I removed it on my prevous 06 Z71 first thing too.

I ordered a Chevy Silver Crew Z71 Vortec Max and comes in the 12/18/06. If you don't mind posting pics with the air dam removed it would be helpful because I am debating on doing the same thing. Lot of time to think because I have been waiting since 10/19/06.

I am not sure how to post them here, but just click on my garage button and I put a few in that area. Hope it helps you make your decision!

Actually, I saw a new chevy 1500 truck parked right next to a new '07 truck on the dealers lot and the clearance for the front valance looks to be exactly the same. I think the new models looks lower because of the way it is designed.
