Antenna Delete Mod

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if you can get a radio delete option (say for a work truck) that would have a smooth cowl piece?

I just tried to spec out Silverado and Sierra WT's. I couldn't find a complete "radio delete" option. I did find "U2J XM Satellite Radio Delete." But, that sounds like it only removes XM, not the whole radio.

Anyone know how to take the antenna off the 07 and newer trucks? I want to get rid of it real bad!!

I'm with you on this one, I wish the onstar antenna was also the am/fm antenna. anyone sene the am/fm antennas on those fancy bmw and benz, loooks kina like the onstar one but its on the roof above the rear window, one of those would be cool parallel to the onstar tenna. iv always thought over the years the big long dorky tennas was an eye sore. maybe I can find a replacement that's only a inch or so in length. ill post a link if I can find one.woot, one more for my third wrench. collecting wrenches like pokemon :)

I just did this to my NBS and the reception is every bit as good now as it was before. I do live near the city though so I can't speak to how it may behave in the more rural areas.

I used 10GA wire and two loop connectors, although I did have to Dremel them out just a bit to fit. I found a 7mm nut and bolt and used the nut, along with a flat and lock washer on the post, and the bolt with both washers on the antenna. I did, however, zip tie the antenna under the lip of the fender rather than the above it as in the pictures in this thread. I wrapped a little electrical tape around the antenna anywhere it was in contact with the body and applied a few coats of Plasti Dip over the exposed nut and stud and let it dry before replacing the cowl piece. I also used heat-shrink tubing on the wire I made. With the recess and small size of the hole in the cowl, most people would never even know there was supposed to be an antenna there. The Plasti Dip should keep the corrosion away. BTW, the cowl piece just pops off. No screws or fasteners.

Daddy

EDIT: Added the pics. I was just being lazy before. Please excuse the dirty ass truck. It's been nasty around here lately.

  • 5 weeks later...

if you have a cb/ antenna for it, you can run your radio through the cb antennas and when you key the mic it automaticly turns off the radio signal to cb.

The box is about $20

the cowl piece that pops off, do you mean the piece around the antena hole? Broke my antena and was wondering how to take that piece off to get antena base off? Just kinda glanced at it and it looks weird.

Call me stupid here... but WHY would one want to delete the antenna? It isn't even visible in most situations... Reception is gonna suck with the antenna horizontal. There's a reason they are verticlaI... It's because that's how they receive radio signals.

it just doing something to the truck for the sake of doing something to the truck? What am I missing?

I removed mine for three reasons:

1. I think it looks much nicer without the antenna.

2. I hate having to get out and take it off when I go through the wash.

3. I live in a suburban area so I don't notice any change in reception.

That's it for me.

Yes, open your hood and begin lifting the side farthest from the fender and it should pop right out.

Daddy, you take the antenna off to wash it? I've never bothered, and I've never lost one. :sigh:

Also, another place you guys can put this antenna is under the cowl, that way it's completely out of sight, even when you pop the hood.

I thought about that but you really would never know I have an antenna mounted under there unless I told you. The lip on the inside of the fender hides it completely. It's a bit wider than on the 800's. My buddy just bought an '06 Denali XL and we ordered the new cowl piece for his delete but I noticed that his will be a lot more noticeable. As for taking of the antenna for the wash, I had one get bent years ago on my old sierra and I've just always taken them off since. Probably a low percentage chance it would ever happen again but better safe than sorry, I suppose.

FM signals (for the most part) have a circular polarization, so the antenna can be orientated in any direction with equal clarity. Of course if you put it under your hood you may not get quite as good reception if it were out in the open air, but it shouldn't make too big of a difference. You may lose some AM reception, though.

Plus, antenna-less looks good.
