Gauge Overlays And Warranty

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have a 2007 GMC Yukon that was purchased in the US and brought to Canada. The gauges are in MPH and English and I want to change them to Metric. US Speedo sells a Metric OEM black overlay. It is identical to the overlay used on Canadian destined GM vehicles. There are no markings on it saying who made it. The change over is simple; as per the video on their website. All one does is remove some trim, the gauge bezel, unscrew the cluster, disconnect the wire harness, remove the current overlay and install the new one. Then put everything back in reverse. A rep from US Speedo, Harry Brink, says 'emphatically' this wll not affect ones warranty.

I called GM and they said the warranty would be null and void because of odometer tampering. I tried to explain that the odometer is not touched. I think the CR person didn't quite understand the process of the overlay.

Has anyone replaced their overlays while the vehicle was under warranty and got some clarification on this? My local GM dealer said to call GM customer service; which I did.

Canadian dealers honor the warranty on a US spec Tahoe??? Are you sure you have a warranty on that??? I'm pretty sure if you did the reverse (Canada to US) you would have no warranty in the US.

In the US this would not void the warranty unless it caused the problem. Typically something that amounts to a cosmetic "sticker" would not cause a problem (unless your r&r of the cluster messed something up).

Not true. Canadian vehicles are warrantable in the US

If one company started not honoring their warranty becasue the vehicle was bought in a different country,(like some salespeople will tell you to make a local sale) they would not do buisiness for long. I do beleive some people in the know have posted that they only honor it after 12000 miles though. Not sure what thats about.

I dont seee why it would cause a problem if your just sercuring it overtop of the old one.

if you jacked with the needles, and overlay, then those will not be warrantable...everything else will

My warranty is valid in Canada because I live part time in Canada and the US. If I did not have this arrangement than GM would only honor the warranty after after 6 months and 12000 Kilometers because the vehicle was bought in the US. If I needed warranty in Canada it would be considered repairs as if I were a traveller. I used my US address for the purchase and the vehicles warranty. I have all of that in writing from GM and actually have had some warranty work done in Canada.

Many car companies DO NOT honor warranties for cars sold in other countries. One reason I've heard for this is not that the cars are so different between markets but that the money to support the warranty comes from the sale of the vehicle in it's original market. Many car companies run each market seperately (the simple way to look at this is that it's similiar to a franchise for each country, this is not truly independant ownership like a franchise implies but they are accounted for and judged independantly).

Here is the P&P Info:

GM Dealers:

a. Warranty Coverage Canadian Owners

The warranty issued by GM of Canada to purchasers in Canada applies to GM vehicles registered and normally operated in Canada.

Effective September 1, 2002 all vehicles originally sold in Canada with an "in-service date" on or after September 1, 2002, be owned for 6 months and have 12,000 kilometers (7500 miles) on the odometer, before a GM dealer in the U.S. is authorized to perform any warranty work except as provided in the additional information to follow. Vehicles must also have the odometer converted by a GM authorized Electronic Service Center.

Any warranty claims submitted by dealers for a vehicle originally sold in Canada that has less than 6 months from the in-service date, has less than 12,000 kilometers (7500 miles), and has not had an odometer conversion by an authorized service center, will reject. (List of centers at the end of this section)

Exceptions to the above restrictions on performing warranty work are Canadian owners touring in the U.S. or Canadian citizens relocating their residence to the U.S.

Dealer is to verify eligibility by checking GMVIS to determine the status of serviceability. If the owner is a Canadian tourist, the Dealer must verify the customer's Canadian residency (i.e. Canadian driver's license or Canadian vehicle registration) and keep a copy of it in the Dealer's files. Claims that fall under this category should be "H" routed to the Area Service Manager for payment and submitted in kilometers, and not miles.

GM Dealers in the U.S. are still authorized to perform any work required for the completion of a recall, special coverage or customer satisfaction program, regardless of the mileage or in-service date.

GM Dealers in the U.S. are authorized to perform warranty work on vehicles originally sold in Canada if the vehicle has been in service for over 6 months and has 12,000 or more kilometers (7500 miles). REMINDER: If there is evidence that the odometer has been disconnected, its reading altered, or the mileage can not be determined, the vehicle may still not be eligible for warranty work as provided in Section 1.2.2.2 of this Policies and Procedures Manual. Any odometer repairs or replacements may only be performed by an approved GM source for the vehicle to be eligible for warranty work (list of ESCs can be found in Article 1.5.9).

b. Warranty Coverage Touring Owner's From Mexico and Foreign Countries

  • Owner's touring in the U.S. with a GM vehicle sold in Mexico or other foreign country and requiring emergency warranty service, dealer should provide service and request customer payment for the work. The owner should be instructed to seek reimbursement upon return to their home country. Should circumstances arise where the owner is not able to pay, contact your division service representative for assistance.

c. Warranty Coverage U.S. Owner's Touring in Canada, Mexico and Foreign Countries

  • U.S. owner's touring in Canada, Mexico or other foreign countries should seek emergency warranty repairs, preferably from a GM dealer selling and servicing the particular brand GM vehicle. If warranty repair charges are paid for by the owner, a reimbursement request through his/her selling dealer should be made upon return to the U.S. by submitting the original paid receipt showing the work performed, proof of ownership and any failed parts, if possible.

d. Warranty Coverage U.S. Military/Government Personnel - U.S. and Overseas

  • For U.S. Military/Government personnel operating their privately owned GM vehicle either purchased through the Post Exchange Program or taken overseas from the U.S., the U.S. vehicle warranty terms apply. If a used U.S. GM vehicle is purchased overseas by U.S. Military/Government personnel from a non-U.S. Military/Government personnel, the U.S. GM warranty coverage does not apply.

Saab Dealers:

a. International and Diplomat Sales (IDS)

U.S. specification vehicles sold through the Saab IDS program carry the regular U.S. new car warranty, Federal and, if applicable, California Emission warranties, and U.S. Perforation warranty upon entering the U.S. The warranty beginning date is the date the owner signs for the car in Europe.

NOTE: Cars available under the IDS Program can be ordered through any U.S. Saab dealer. Customers may either take delivery of the car in Europe, for use during their stay, or have the car shipped back to the U.S. directly after the paperwork is signed. Cars shipped direct are delivered to a U.S. dealer for PDI and customer pickup.

Sales reporting of cars sold through the Saab IDS program is done via a Delivery Voucher. A copy of the delivery voucher is given to the owner and must be presented to the servicing dealer as proof of warranty. Once the car arrives in the U.S. and is brought to a Saab dealer for service, the voucher must then be mailed to Saab Cars USA, Inc. to activate the warranties. Owners receive a U.S. Owner's Manual and Warranty Booklet in an envelope with a letter from Saab Cars USA, Inc. upon receipt of the voucher.

NOTE: While the car is operated abroad, the warranty is for the term applicable in that country. (e.g. 12 months, unlimited mileage). However, upon return and registration of the vehicle in the 50 states of the United States, District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico, Saab Cars USA will reimburse the owner for any "warranty repairs" completed and paid for while traveling in a foreign country. The owner must provide original repair orders or paid invoice and send them to the Customer Assistance Center. The owner receives the remaining portion of the applicable warranties.

NOTE: U.S. specification cars are also available in other countries through the IDS program. For example, cars can be sold in Germany to U.S. military personnel stationed there. Delivery of such cars consists of the same documentation as a car delivered through the U.S. IDS Program.

NOTE: Check with the Warranty Department if you have any questions regarding a vehicle's origin or warranty status. To expedite claim handling and avoid any misunderstanding, enter the owner's name and address in the warranty claim text area. Note: All 1993 and later IDS cars have Saab Roadside Assistance coverage.

NOTE: There is no warranty from Saab Cars USA, Inc. on non-USA accessories (meaning accessories not approved and cataloged by Saab Cars USA. Inc.).

Important: Aside from a world-wide 12-month new car warranty, Saab Cars USA, Inc., will not cover any other warranties or agreements unless that car was built to U.S.A. specifications and sold through the world-wide IDS program. Saabs sold outside the U.S. do not have any emission control warranties through Saab Cars USA, Inc. Emission control warranties and recalls are the responsibility of the "importer".

b. Warranty on Saabs Sold or Taken Outside the United States

Saab vehicles sold in most other markets usually have a basic 12-month/ unlimited mileage new car warranty although some of the specific terms vary. Dealers doing warranty repairs on cars sold outside of the U.S., should ask for documentation of when the warranty began and a copy of the warranty terms.

Saabs purchased in the U.S., but taken out of the country, can have new car warranty work done in countries with Saab importers. Owners should have complete documentation of the vehicle's in-service date, maintenance, etc., prior to leaving the U.S.. Upon return and registration of the vehicle in the 50 states or District of Columbia or Puerto Rico, Saab Cars, USA will reimburse the owner for any "warranty repairs" completed and paid for while traveling in a foreign country. The owner must provide original repair orders or paid invoices and send them to the Customer Assistance Center. The owner receives the remaining portion of the applicable warranties.

**Concerning Canada specifically: U.S. Saab owners traveling in Canada will find representation through Saturn/Saab dealers. Canada's Customer Assistance Center phone number is 1-800-263-1993 (from Canada).

The manufacturer's limited warranty provided to purchasers of Saab vehicles sold in Canada applies to vehicles registered and normally operated in Canada. This limited warranty coverage does NOT include No-Charge Scheduled Maintenance. When such vehicles are brought into the U.S., whether due to relocation of the Canadian owner, sale of the used vehicle to a U.S. purchaser, or purchase and resale of the vehicle (new or used) by a U.S. dealer, the applicable limited warranty coverage existing on such vehicle at the original time of purchase in Canada, shall remain in effect.

Before a U.S. Saab dealer is authorized to perform any warranty work on a vehicle originally imported for sale in Canada, the dealer must verify warranty eligibility by checking the "Inquiry By Chassis" screen to determine the status of the vehicle. If the owner is a Canadian tourist, the Dealer must verify the customer's Canadian residency (i.e., Canadian driver's license and Canadian vehicle registration) and attach copies of same to the repair order. These copies are to be stored in the Dealer's files.

The first time a warranty/recall/campaign repair is made to a Canadian vehicle, the Dealer must contact the Saab Dealer Assistance Center at 1-800-934-9403, prompt #1, to register the vehicle in the Saab Automobile, Inc. warranty system. Once registered with the Saab Warranty Department, Canadian cars will be flagged with an "X" in the warranty status code field on the "Inquiry by Chassis" screen on IRIS.

If the customer advises that there is an open recall on their vehicle, the dealer is to verify this information with the Dealer Assistance Center prior to performing any repairs. The Dealer Assistance Center will request the VIN, and the customer's name and address, in order to verify an open recall and to add the vehicle information to the USA warranty system. Once the recall has been completed, the dealer is to fax the repair order to the attention of the Saab Warranty Department at (810) 835-8211. Please note on the fax submittal form that a recall has been completed on a Canadian vehicle. The repair order is being requested so that the open recall can be closed in the General Motors Vehicle Information System (GMVIS), which contains all Saab Canadian VIN and recall information.

Please note that any expenses associated with work needed to make a vehicle U.S. compliant, is not covered under the Saab limited warranty or goodwill.

c. Demonstrator and Company Car Warranty

1. Dealer Demonstrator: A vehicle put into service for customers, employees, etc. to drive. Any vehicle found to be in service at a dealership with 600 or more miles and not registered as a dealer demonstrator will have an in-service date applied, beginning from the first date of service as determined by Saab Cars USA, Inc.

2. Saab Company Car Warranty: The term "company car" covers cars used by Saab Cars USA, Inc., such as field cars, employee lease cars, press cars, etc. These cars are sold at a discount to Saab dealers.

  • Service work other than warranty (maintenance, accessory installation, etc.) performed on cars driven by Saab field representatives is to be paid by the Saab representative.
  • Company car warranty/dealer demonstrator warranty is the same as the new car warranty and starts with the vehicle's company car in-service date.

3. When a dealer sells a demonstrator or former Saab company car, a Warranties & Service Record Booklet indicating the car is a former dealer demonstrator or Saab company (check box) with the correct "date vehicle warranty expires" noted must be given to the new owner. General Motors Service Policies and Procedures

d. Saab Vehicles Imported into North American

Vehicles that are imported into North America and sold by a source other than the factory-authorized importer for this market have a 12- or 24-month warranty (dependent upon model year and retail date) and are flagged with a "G" in the warranty status code field on the "Inquiry by Chassis" screen on IRIS.

Only passenger cars imported through, sold, and reported by Saab Cars USA, Inc., General Motors of Canada Ltd., or the Saab IDS program and registered and operated in any of the 50 states of the United States, Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, or any of the Canadian provinces or territories are covered by the warranties issued for those specific model year vehicles.

Specific legal requirements may apply to these customers. We recommend you seek legal counsel to determine all rights and liabilities before performing repair services other than those under warranty.
