Looking to put a 2nd battery in my 05 GMC 2500hd gas job. I did the samething in my last truck(02 chevy 2500hd gas) but I would like to find a battery tray that is for the spot on the pass. side where it mounts in the diesels. Last time I made one out of sheet metel but was not happy with it. anyone know where I can find a cheap factory one or an aftermarket? oh ya the battery is a yellow top optima. I need the two because of the winch.

here is one I found

You should be able to do it with factory parts fairly easily. I have an '05 2500HD gasser with factory dual batteries.

Make sure you have top clearence if you use an Optima with the factory tray. The top posts on an Optima won't clear the hood on my 2000. Mark.

I purchased the factory tray. I also hooked up the Painless solenoid kit for dual batteries (nice). I run the Optima Yellow Top in that tray. I have no clearance problems on my '06. Very clean setup.

I used that painless kit too. what did you use for battery wire? I went to a welding supply store and asked for 2ga. but got 0ga for the price of 2ga because the guy had some scrap that was to short for him but perfect for me. where can I find a factory battery tray? anyone know part numbers?

I just went to the Dealer and purchased the tray. It all depends on what you are going to use that battery for. I use it to run accessories and trailer power so I don't really need a heavy guage. I do think I ran 2 ga to the charging system though. If you are running a winch, the heavier the better. Make sure you have a great ground on the winch also. My corroded thoughout the years on a previous vehicle. It will find a ground anywhere it can. I smoked a couple of things that day. Live and learn. Someday I hope to have a winch on this unit. Good luck!

well the winch gets (+) and (-) at the battery. I grounded the 2nd battery with a bolt to the frame near the pass side, there was a nice little hole right where I needed it.

I'll call the dealer today or sometime this week. If it's a lot of money I'll just make my own again

Here's my setup and this is how its hooked up. The solenoid is a Cole Hersee Part #24051 and the tray is factory GM. The extra cable on the left side of the solenoid is for the winch.
