How Do You Like Your 4.8l

I was looking into getting a truck but with gas prices so high and lease payments more than i want i was looking into a jeep wrangler unlimted, 27mph CND and about 300 a month, then gm came out wiht a 4.8L crew cab lt1 that get 26mpg CND and around 300 a month. I drive a 98 5.7 gmc now and it gets about 18mpg and im having constant engine problems......so my question is it has 300hp but its relativly small but im sure it has more power than my 98 and more cab room and better milage and most important its not a dodge even thoe the wrangler is the only thing i could see myself driving over most v6 suvs and any car...

It's good for what I need it for, but it's not the best gas saver. I get around 15mpg in town with mine.

Yeah...mine does everything I need it to do. Plenty of pep and has towed without struggle anything I've thrown at it. If I'm being good I can get 16mpg in the city and 18-19.5mpg on the interstate. A lot of people dismiss the 4.8l and jump to the 5.3l but really, the 4.8l is a great engine.

 

However, I got a 4.8l because it was all they had when I was cutting deals. If they had a 5.3l regular cab 4x4, I'd be driving that but really for no reason other than to say I have it.

I like my 4.8L just fine. With a little tuning and a few other mods, I feel like I have a 350cid under my hood and I still can get 21MPG on the highway (if I keep my right foot light) :cool:

The 4.8 is a good motor. I do wish I had the 5.3, but in reality, I don't need anything more than the 4.8. My one complaint is it doesn't have great low end power, but it gets the job done, and more. I've got 167,000 miles, and still running strong.

Ive got the lightest possible truck (reg cab 2wd std bed) and never tow more than 2000 lbs. I got the 4.8 because I didnt want afm this early in its production. This engine is way more than I need, and its so smooth and quiet. You cant safely drive a fullsize pickup fast so if you dont tow heavy loads the 4.8 will be great. I originally wanted the V-6 but couldnt find one with power windows/locks/ and cloth seats so I upgraded a litttle. I get 15-16 mpg in the city and all of our gas is 10% ethanol so you will do better if you have pure gas in your area.

Have had two of the 4.8 engines, one with the 3.73 axles and one with the 4.10 axles, and liked them both. They didn't lack for power and should not be overlooked. From what I hear the mileage isn't any more or less than the 5.3 engines but I can't verify that as I have not had my new truck with the 5.3 engine that long. I used to mostly get 17mpg (highway) with the 4.8's, occasionally 18 or 19 highway. Never had any mechanical troubles with any GM vehicle I have owned.

Like it alot. Never used it for towing yet since I bought it though.

 

I haven't had my driving license for even a year, drove a Sundance 4cyl for 6 months, now with a 4.8L under the hood, I don't really care for the "lack" of low end power frankly :cool:

 

It has a nice idle sound too.

I have the 4.8 in a 4WD crew cab. Works great. I get about the same mileage as everyone else, 16 around town, and 18 on the hiway. I have a friend with the 5.7, he has more low end torque than me, but I have no trouble keeping up with him driving in the mountains if I drop it down a gear. He gets 13 mpg, I get 18. I like mine better.

 

Why not keep you truck and get an old beater high mpg car? - I have an old Camry, gets 35 on the hiway.

My 4.8L is more than enough. It is also a good option if you are going to be driving alot around town, because you are rarely going to be using the AFM, which is the real benefit of the 5.3. Be sure to get the right rear end as well. I have the 3.42, but it would work alot better with the 3.73. My .02

I like the 4.8 in my truck. Some of our company vehicles have the 5.3 and I had a 5.3 in my 05 but I can't tell much difference in them. It's minimal for sure. Of course there are those who will chime in claiming to feel a huge difference but it just isn't there.. not in specs... not in driving experience. Towing heavy items migh show up a difference due to the .5 liter larger displacement but I think you'll have to go to a bigger engine to get real difference.

 

I'm sure a 6.0 or 6.2 would be another story. Those things are monsters! :uhoh:

I like mine just fine and it does everything I need it to do. I average 16/17mpg 50/50 HWY/CITY. My only complaint is on the highway with the cruise on sometimes it kicks down a gear to maintain speed on some hills. Not a problem, I had a 6.0 before and it didnt do that so that is the only reason I notice.

I bought the 4.8 because i didnt want the AFM. I'm currently getting anywhere from 17-20 MPG highway. Throw a trailer behind it, and it will get 15-16 MPG. I had a gravel loaded 16foot trailer behind mine a couple weeks back, and it pulled it pretty good. I didn't see the point in spending $800 for 20 horses and a AFM that gets the same or worse MPG than the 4.8.. But that's just me. :uhoh:
