Problem Not Truck Related But Still Gm

Question

the wifes pontiac has developed a problem. over the last year at least once a week the engine will give very small stutter and the tach will drop to zero and the trac light comes on. Car continues to run fine. Shut the engine off and restart and all is well again. this is increasing in frequency. no dtc codes till yesterday. the car stalled on slow down to a corner. she restarted and went on. I can't remember the dtc # but it showed crankshaft position sensor. the strange part is no SES light. Why?. would the tach problem likely be related to the sensor? Could there be something other than the CPS that would cause this. Car still runs good.

Pontiac site is pretty much useless

thanks

OK

the scanner is reading this:

P0336 CPS "A" circuit range/performance

I have set up an appointment for tomorrow morning at the local dealer. If it is possible to get a reply by the morning I would appreciate it.

thanks

I took the wifes car in the local dealer and had it scanned. Showed these codes p0332,p0327,p0336,p1811..

I only pulled the 336 code, i guess these less than expensive readers cant get them all. i take it that 332 327 336 all related to the cps, the 1811 is from the trans. Is the 1811 something to be concerned with/is it serious.

thanks

Did you get the CPS replaced? This is the most likely culprit, and yes the tach signal comes from the CPS. Also, the EBTCM needs a tach signal in order to calculate torque so that it can operate the traction control, if that signal is lost, then it disables the trac control.

I tried looking through the TSB's to find anything resembling what you have above, but did not find anything. Having the code might help.
