Towing, Towing, Towing!

So, I am out shopping for a Travel Trailer this week. The new hitches appear far superior to some of the prior GM hitches, and I am sure I will be okay but I thought I would check in with those of you who tow a bunch.

I have had 2500s prior to this truck, and never worried about a thing. I loaded up my big camper, hooked the boat or trailer to a DrawTite Class V and away I went...I went Draw Tite because the GM hitches were junk!

Now I will be pulling a 6500# (max) trailer with a Weight distributing hitch and sway bars, and just wanted to make sure the stock hitch was the ticket...what do you think?

Thanks!

What made you come to the conclusion that they we're junk? I'm only asking because i'm curious not to be a smart a$$. I've never had any problems with a towing package but have ripped a couple bumpers off

Well...my '98, '01, and my '04 2500HD all developed cracks on the welds where the tubes meet the flanges. They didn't even weld them all the way around! That is what made me come to this conclusion.

I never said your '06 had this issue, but my previous trucks did...plus many others with HDs like mine in those years.

I tow an 8,000# RV with my y2k Suburban...no issues what so ever. Tongue weight of my RV is near 800#s when it is full of all liquids and fully loaded for a trip.

If you camper was longer than that truck bed, you may have been putting a lot of stress on the hitches due to the length of the draw bar?

If you are planning on pulling a normal TT with your new truck, you should have no hitch issues at all. Just make sure to get a proper weight distributing hitch...Like the Equal-i-zer.

good luck with your hunt for a new RV.

Thanks! I have narrowed it down to a few choices, should have one soon!

I really cannot comment on the new receivers. I replaced my OE receiver on my 02 because of serious flexing issues and I went with a Putnam XDR Class V receiver. I use an Equal i Zer brand WD Hitch on my camper and love it. It may not be a Hensley but for $400.00 vs $3,000.00, it is very close.
