Confused By Something Related To A Truck Cap

i went to a used truck cap place today and was looking at caps for my truck . well they proceed to tell me they have to wire 3rd brake light on my truck , even tho cap i looked at dosent have one and my 88 dosent have a 3rd brake light .

 

 

do i have to pay for the 50 doller light for cap and have it installed or do i not need it because my truck dident have one to start with ?

You are only required to maintain the safety features that were mandated by law in the year of manufacture. There are some old restored relics out there without turn signals and they're legal. Tell him that the third brake light will destroy the integrity of your restoration.

It's probably just ignorance on the part of the salesperson. He's been told that the brake light is a must have feature. A vehicle that didn't originally have a CHMSL isn't required to have one when a shell is installed.
