Replacing Turn Signal Swich

Recommended Posts

Posted

My turn signals stopped working today. For months I've been able to position the four-way flasher pull-up switch in just the right place for the signals to work, but it doesn't work anymore.

I've priced the part, and it is $568. I guess the insane price is because I have cruise control.

I'll be heading to the wrecker to see if I can find the part, but I can't seem to unplug the wires from the back of the assembly.

Can anyone give me a few hints.

Thanks.

man i tried doing the turn signal in my 84 and ended up breaking a bunch of stuff so i went to a picknpull yard and got a complete steering column for 20 bucks and just swapped out entire unit. easier for me just a thought

I've already got the cover off the column and the turn signal switch unbolted. I just need to unplug the wires at the back of the unit now. I found a way better price on the Internet for the switch - about $119.

I don't know how they can justify five times that much at my local NAPA.

Then again, I live in Canada, where we get screwed every time we purchase anything.

Aha! I noticed on the picture of the new unit on the Internet that the plugs do not remove at the back of the unit. A wiring harness comes standard, so the plugs are somewhere under the dashboard.

The saga continues...

Mine is alot older than yours so dont know if it will be the same as mine but my column has ignition,hi-beam, turn signal, cruise switches or wire connectors mounted right on the column itself so it shouldnt be that hard to trace back i would think. haynes manual are my bible i know there weak but sometimes all i need is a step in the right direction! hope it helps

not all that bad to do, but spend the money on a quality switch, there is a reason for the price differance, trust me. i changed mine twice in 1 week with the cheap crap before i bit the bullet and spent the money on a ac-delco part that actually works like the original did. a couple beers and about an hour and you got it done.

Thanks for all the advice, guys. I found where the switch plugs in under the dash. Man, they certainly don't give you much room to work under there. Now I just have to figure out how these plugs actually "unplug" so I can plug the new one in.

Never a dull moment with one of these old trucks.

Well, I changed the switch today, what a pain. Anyway, my turn signals worked all day, then suddenly stopped working again. I think the relay may also be shot, but I can't figure out where it is. I'm going to stick my head under the dash again to try to figure this out.I used to really take turn signals for granted. Not anymore.

Well, I finally found the turn signal flasher. It is locate just to the left of the ashtray, but nearly impossible to see.

I replaced it with a new one and everything works fine now.

What a major pain...
