My 1 Week Old 2008 Silverado Went To The Shop Today

I picked up my 2008 Silverado LT2 last week, and noticed a very faint but annoying ticking sound coming from under the dash on the passenger side. I thought I would have the dealership check it out when I got my tags, but alas I didn't make it that far.

This morning on the way to work, it sounded like someone was up under my dash ratcheting a dang socket wrench continuously. I pulled to a local parking lot and proceeded to remove the hush plate under the dash, and remove the fan blower (portable socket set FTW). Sure enough, there were about 8 teeth in the squirrel cage that had broken off.

I drove to the dealership by my office and showed them the blower, jokingly stating there was an obvious manufacturer defect. Even though the service advisor was amused, they wouldn't just give me the part to replace it, so I waited as they had a tech look at it and the rest of the housing/guts up under the dash. They replaced the fan blower (nothing else) and I was on my way 30 minutes later.

As I waited, I spoke with the parts manager and asked if he had seen a lot of GMT900 fan blowers go through his doors. Interestingly, he said he was going through about 10 a month. I couldn't find any info on problems with these blowers on the Internet, so I thought this might be helpful to my fellow GMT900 owners who might come across this. If your baby is ticking under the dash, this might be the cause.

Here's a pic of my new toy (replaced my 2000 Sierra). I love it, despite this bit of trouble....

I have had the slight, ever-so-faint tick underneath my dash with the HVAC on ever since the truck was new. It never has gotten bad like your experience though.

Well as they say s**t happens. I had to have the transmission removed and the rear main seal replaced on mine when it was about 3 months old but I would still buy another.

I would take it in and have them check it out. If it totally breaks, you will be without climate control until its fixed, and winter is approaching... Let me know and I can tell you how to remove it and check it yourself.

I see a very undesirable trend developing here. In their unending quest to save money, GM seems to substituting cheaper flimsier parts for throughout these trucks. Which is ultimately going to lead to more problems down the road. Of course, they could not care less if these parts fail after the factory warranty expiration.

One company that went way too far in this direction is Volkswagen. They design good cars but assemble them from questionable quality parts made all over the world. And they have some serious quality problems.

I too had a faint ticking sound coming from the left front center vent (one to the left of the radio). It was only noticeable when the blower was on high but it was still annoying as hell on hot summer days. I took it in recently and my dealer said they replaced the stems that hold the vent shut-off flap. Surprisingly this fixed the issue. I wasn't happy that I was already having slight issues on an 08 truck, but I guess I should just be happy the whole damn thing didn't disintegrate!
