Possible Oil Leak?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I was looking under the hood the other day and noticed oil on the back part of the valve covers. They have a light coating on them. Should I be concerned about this? The truck is a 2008 all terrain with 25,000 on it. The dealer has done all the oil changes and other repairs. Thanks for and input

At 25K I would not be concerned about minor seepage. If it pools or starts dripping, then yeah. What I see in the pics doesn't look alarming at all to me.

I agree..my old 04 sierra was just like your photos....I never had a problem

My LS1 did the same thing. I cleaned up the area and snugged down the VC bolts and it was fine from then on out.

The gaskets GM uses are very good and hold up well over the long haul if installed right.

I would just make sure thats where its coming from, there is a service bulletin on the rear main seal. I just had mine replaced at 26k... Just a FYI

just had my rear main done at 25k

throw some dye in your oil and check it at you rnext oil change with the dye detection light and see if it is seeping through

Were would I look to see if it is the rear main? Would you notice any oil on the driveway when the main seal leaks? Thanks for all the help.

The oil residue in the pics is around the valvecover area. A rear main oil leak would leave no oil in this area. If you believe you have a rear main leak you need to inspect around the rear of the oil pan and front transmission bellhousing area. There is actually a small inspection plate on the bellhousing that you can pull out and look inside. To your question, yes you could see oil dripping on the driveway if the rear main leak was bad enough.

If these rear mains are leaking at such low mileage then GM is using crap quality parts or their install process is flawed. I've built many engines including LS1's etc and have never had a rear main leak.
