cujo8 Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 I have a 5.3 L V8 in my 2006 GMC Sierra and I'm trying to add some aftermarket mods to improve overall performance and fuel economy at the same time. I know the fuel economy part will depend heavily on the weight of my right foot, but I know you can improve engine performance w/o negatively affecting fuel economy. It is my understanding that the first and best way to improve your engines performance is allowing it to breath and exhale w/o restriction. To that end I have already installed a Banks cold air intake system and my next order of business is to upgrade the stock exhaust system. Right now I'm leaning towards the Banks Monster Exhaust system. These type of upgrades I know will help, but other flow improving upgrades I'm not as certain about as to how much of a difference they will make in overall performance and MPG. The aftermarket upgrades in question are 1. mass-air flow sensors, 2. larger throttle body assemblies, and 3. throttle body spacers. Anyone have any experience with these type of upgrades and how they affected the engines performance and MPG? I'm planning on getting a Black Bear Tune in mid-April so I would like to complete all the worth while engine mods before the tune. Thanks. Jim

You'd be better off just sending me the money you would spend on the throttle body, mass-air flow sensors and throttle body spacers. If you're interested, pm me and I will give you my paypal address.
nbscanuck Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 a stock maf is good for up to as much as 500hp. so unless your running a BIG blower, nothing needed there. CAI, exhaust, and tune or tuner are best way to spend money. unless you have piles and want to over the top.
L29er Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Although my application requires it, some of these things i installed prior to my final product, i installed a oversize throttle body and notice better throttle respose, BUT nothing else, I changed to a high flow MAF, it made no difference once so ever, although IS beneficial to my current application. As for the TB spacer, its a joke, most are actually restricting and even if not restricting only icrease the distance air has to travel to get to your combustion chamber (not good) Hope this helps... A tune and exhaust will be your greatest gains hands down...
cujo8 Posted March 27, 2009 Author Posted March 27, 2009 Thanks for the replies and you guys basically confirmed my suspicions about these upgrades. I see the guys on HorsePower TV installing these type of upgrades all the time and they say they work and they probably do at WOT applications. I myself don't drive my truck under too many WOT conditions, so I will use the money I saved to get an exhaust upgrade instead :-). Thanks.

Thats some thing else many do not understand. The gains are at 5Krpm and above. How many people do you know who constantly drive in that RPM range daily?

You are absolutely correct about that last statement. Many automotive enthusiasts make the "bigger is better mistake" when they set out to add engine performance parts to their ride. They will here or read how great an 850CFM double-pumper carb and larger single-plane high rise intake manifold worked great on the track on an all out race engine and they think the same type of parts on their street driven vehicle are the answer to their performance goals. These type of parts are designed for use for large displacement engines operating in the high RPM range and WOT and not for cruising around town.

Well, at least on the weekend they're pushing 9K.

The difference is purely in ur mind. To get the actual difference, dyno both trucks with and without the spacers.

How did that work out on your sequential fuel injection?
MikeInCtown Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Just to last. Rather than spend money on the MAF, throttle body or spacers, take $1,400 and get the long tube headers and high flow cats and couple them with the free flowing exhaust.
Jennabear Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 I would say headers and a cam, the stock cats flow just as good as any aftermarket ones!
