Gm Ifs Axle Identification Marking?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how to identify what gearing is in the 88-up IFS axles by markings on the axle itself?

I'm guessing the differential is not attached to a truck?

I am asking this friend that has a small junk yard. He gets trucks that may not be stock or the diffs have been changed. Is there is a way to easily decode the markings on the axle housing to indicate the gear ratio?

Some times there is a metal ID tag bolted to the cover. I'm unsure if the newer vehicles have this, I dont have a 4X4 to verify. If its out of the JY, your check the condition of the part before your use it right? When you open the diff to inspect or change the fluid, just count the rotations.
