Hi, I'm Zane Mirva from GM-Trucks.com
0:17
And if you didn't see my last video on the 10 things we love and the one thing we hate
0:22
about the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe, make sure to watch that video first
0:27
It goes over all the new and exciting changes that the Tahoe and the Suburban have undergone
0:32
for 2021. So while last time we were behind the wheel of the Tahoe, today we're driving the Chevy Suburban
0:41
It's nearly identical under the skin to the Tahoe, has the same interior, exterior, technology
0:47
and engine options. It is only one small difference. The Suburban is nearly 15 inches longer than the Tahoe, which means more room for people
0:58
and more room for their stuff. And if you've been following the Suburban for a while, you'll know that it is the undisputed
1:04
king of family hauling. You can put as many kids, dogs, animals, pets and stuff in the back of it as you want
1:12
But the question we're asking today is, can it tow? And to find out that answer, we're going to use this 30 foot trailer
1:20
This trailer is huge, eight feet wide, eight feet tall and has plenty of room for toys
1:27
Speaking of, it's got a Polaris General inside already with room for more
1:33
You could fit a whole nother one in here. So this 30 foot long trailer with a 24 foot box weighs around 2,700 pounds
1:42
This Polaris General adds another 1,500 to that total. So today we're going to be having a trailer that has around 4,200 pounds total
1:52
Now that's not the heaviest trailer in the world, but we feel it's really representative
1:56
of what someone might casually want to pull on a daily basis, whether it is for work or
2:01
with their toys in the background. Our question that we're going to answer is, can the Suburban handle it
2:07
Unlike other automakers, thankfully Chevy has told us exactly how much this particular
2:13
Suburban can tow. That information can be found in the driver's door jam
2:20
By looking at our towing information sticker, we see that this particular Suburban is rated
2:26
to pull a trailer that weighs up to 7,900 pounds. Well now that we know we're safe to go, it's time to hook things up
2:34
First we'll pop off the rear bumper trailer hitch cover plate. Thankfully no tools are needed
2:39
Then we'll slide in our adjustable hitch and get everything hooked up
2:46
Not forgetting to cross our trailer safety chains. Now that we've ensured everything is secure and our emergency trailer brake cable is attached
2:53
let's go inside and get started. Now this 2021 Suburban has the optional 420 horsepower, 6.2 liter V8 engine paired with
3:04
Chevy's 10-speed automatic transmission. In theory, that should mean smooth sailing with this setup, but is it the case
3:12
All right, we're in the Suburban, we've got the trailer hooked up, and we're ready to go
3:16
But first, can you do me a favor and hit that subscribe button and the like button below
3:21
this video? Doing so will really help us grow and create more videos like this in the future
3:27
Thank you very much. And now that we have that out of the way, let's get going and trailering
3:38
Now just to remind you, I'm in a 2021 Chevrolet Suburban and I'm towing a 30-foot long trailer
3:45
that weighs approximately 4,200 pounds. And it feels like nothing is behind me
3:53
It's pretty incredible. One of the better features about this particular Suburban is it has the optional air ride suspension
4:01
On an everyday basis, that air ride suspension is going to add a lot of comfort
4:06
But when you combine it with towing, it keeps your vehicle level and handling smoother and
4:12
more predictably, which is really important when you've got thousands of pounds of weight
4:16
behind you. So with that 30-foot trailer, the entire length of our vehicle is around 50 feet, which is
4:26
quite the thing to be pulling around. Thankfully, the Suburban has huge side mirrors, which allow me to see behind me and around
4:35
me in a pretty clear view. Also, its surround view camera system will let me check in on the trailer and things
4:43
that are going on around the trailer all the time. Now that we're on the highway and at speed, it's pretty easy to see how different this
4:50
is from our Silverado. With an independent rear suspension, the ride is definitely more comfortable, but it isn't
4:58
quite as planted as our Silverado's live rear axle is. And you know, that's not necessarily a bad thing
5:05
It just takes a little bit more mental effort to keep going down the road in a straight line and avoid that trailer wagging you all over the place
5:12
But for anyone who has even a little bit of experience pulling, it shouldn't be a big deal
5:19
Thankfully, this Suburban also has an integrated trailer brake controller, which means when
5:25
you hook it up to a trailer like this that has integrated brakes, there's nothing you
5:30
need to add to feel confident trailering and towing and more importantly stopping because
5:35
it all just works together. You simply set the gain and you're good to go
5:40
The 6.2 liter engine comes with 420 horsepower. That's more than the 355 you'd get in the 5.3 liter
5:48
And although it does use a little bit more fuel on a daily basis, if your game is towing
5:53
or hauling anything of a substantial weight, that's an upgrade you are going to want to make
6:01
But if you're towing all the time in your Suburban, maybe you'll consider the 3 liter
6:06
Duramax diesel engine. It's going to provide you with better fuel economy and better low end torque, but not
6:13
as much horsepower as the 6.2 liter does. So overall, this is pretty anticlimactic
6:19
I mean, we kind of knew the Suburban was built for towing, but the ease at which it pulls
6:25
4,200 pounds and handles a 30 foot trailer is really impressive. So if you're considering one of these vehicles and you had a second thought in your mind
6:34
about how it might handle pulling a horse trailer or a utility trailer or an enclosed
6:40
trailer, let this video give you some peace of mind. The Suburban is going to do great
6:46
And even if you chose the 5.3 liter or the 6.2 or the 3 liter diesel, this vehicle will
6:52
give you the tools you need to feel comfortable towing and to do it safely
7:00
I got to say, one of the things that has really surprised me about this Suburban is how well
7:06
it handles that trailer behind it with an independent rear suspension. I was frankly worried that the independent rear suspension might add some floatiness
7:14
or uncertainty to the rear of the Suburban, where our Silverado's live rear axle is planted
7:21
and solid all the time. But I got to say, that's just not the case
7:26
This Suburban seems to handle this weight just as well as our Silverado with no downsides
7:33
I think that it's possible the air suspension is what is allowing this independent rear
7:38
suspension to behave as well as it does. So if I were you and you were going to tow with your Suburban, the air suspension would
7:45
definitely be something that I would aim on getting. It will substantially increase your confidence when you have a loaded rear or pulling a
7:54
loaded trailer. Well now that we've got a couple dozen miles under our belt, I think it's safe to say that
8:03
this is pretty anticlimactic. If you're thinking about buying a Tahoe or a Suburban and can't decide between that and
8:10
a full-size truck because you're going to be towing stuff, let this video be a value
8:15
to you. You are not going to give up anything by picking the Tahoe and the Suburban over the Silverado
8:22
if you plan on towing a trailer behind it. It's simply personal preference, and no matter which Chevy you choose, you're going to have
8:30
a vehicle that will be capable to do what you need it to do
8:34
Anyways, I'm Zane Merva from GM-Trucks.com. Thank you so much for joining us again, and I'll see you again soon
