20 Quarts of oil in the engine?!

So just yesterday i changed my fathers oil in his 2008 Chevy Duramax 6.6 Lmm.. I had a 4.5gal drain pan and it ended up overfilling and i spilled oil everywhere. Had to get a small bucket to get the rest. Put the old oil back in gallon containers and measured 4.5 gallons (18 quarts) excluding the oil i spilled. What the hell just happened here? He told me the oil was changed about 4 months ago but i wanted to change it cause it was so black. Anyone know why on earth it would have almost double the amount of fluid in it? -

This is the 25500 "RACE" model Evolution from my 2010 LMM. It is in perfect condition and worked excellent on my truck! This tuner was returned to stock before it was removed. It also includes the "HOT UNLOCK" code from Edge. It comes in it's original packaging with OBDII cable, USB download cable, instruction manual, Fusion CD and factory mounting bracket. This tuner is absolutely perfect! I'm asking 600.00 for everything shown. This "RACE" model has 7 power levels. And can read and clear codes. It can also recalibrate your speedometer for different size tires or gear ratios. This is the Edge tuner you want if you are planning to DELETE your DPF! On LMM's the EGR codes are disabled on levels 1-3. The EGR is disabled on levels 4-7. Disabling the speedlimiter on LMM's is preprogrammed in the calibrations on levels 3-7.
