Ultium Cells LLC, a joint venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solution, has reached a significant milestone in its Spring Hill facility by producing its first completed battery cells. This development comes after more than two years since the commencement of the construction process.

Chris Desautels, Plant Director at Ultium Cells LLC, Spring Hill TN, shared his sentiments on LinkedIn, stating, “I am honored and humbled to be a part of this great TN team! These pictures represent the culmination of over two years of collaborative work between our construction team, our process installation team, our technical support teams, and our Ultium Cells team members. Our team is looking forward to the future with excitement and confidence!”

Ultium Cells Background and Expansion:

The journey to this point hasn’t been without its challenges. Ultium Cells LLC’s expansion and development have been a part of a broader strategy to boost General Motors’ EV production capabilities. In late 2022, the Department of Energy facilitated this expansion by providing a $2.5 billion loan to finance new lithium-ion battery cell manufacturing facilities in Ohio, Tennessee, and Michigan. This investment is pivotal for GM’s electric vehicle production, aiming to increase EV capacity to more than one million units in North America by mid-decade.

The Spring Hill plant, in particular, received an additional $275 million investment to enhance battery cell output, which is crucial for GM’s Ultium lineup of electric vehicles.
