There is nothing more frustrating than merging onto the highway in your brand new vehicle, only to find out your premium hands-free driving tech is suddenly locked behind a paywall you already paid for. If you own a recent Chevrolet, GMC, or Cadillac, a frustrating Super Cruise glitch is doing exactly that.

A recently published Technical Service Bulletin reveals that a widespread software issue is falsely telling owners of specific 2025 and 2026 GM vehicles that their subscription has expired. Even worse, dealerships do not have a permanent fix at the moment.

According to GM Preliminary Information bulletin PIT6508 , engineers are currently investigating a software bug causing a false “Super Cruise Subscription Required” message.

The Problem: “Super Cruise Subscription Required”

According to the preliminary information document, customers who have a completely active and valid OnStar plan are encountering an intermittent error. When trying to engage the hands-free driving system, the dashboard throws a “Super Cruise Subscription Required” message and refuses to activate.

This issue spans across specific premium vehicles in the GM lineup for the 2025 and 2026 model years.

The officially affected models include:

The Official Fix: Turn It Off And Back On Again

If you experience this glitch, heading to your local service center will not do much good right now. GM’s engineering team is explicitly instructing dealership technicians not to replace any hardware modules because they are still investigating the root cause of the software bug.

In the meantime, the official GM workaround is the oldest IT trick in the book. If the “Subscription Required” message pops up, you simply need to pull over safely, turn the vehicle completely off, and turn it back on. The bulletin notes that it may take two to three ignition cycles for the system to properly recognize your active OnStar plan and clear the error message.

While having to reboot your brand new truck on the side of the highway is far from ideal, it is currently the only way to get your hands-free driving back online until GM pushes an official update.
