Some 2022 through 2024 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade full-size SUV owners are finding their vehicles batteries are mysteriously dying and/or their rear tailgates are randomly opening all on their own.
General Motors has recently released a Technical Service Bulletin to address these issues, which are related to a faulty part and faulty software. “TSB 24-NA-039 – Dead Battery and / or Unwanted Liftgate Opening” explains the conditions and repair procedure.

TSB 24-NA-039 – Dead Battery and / or Unwanted Liftgate Opening – Vehicles Affected
2022 through 2024 model years of the following vehicles with RPO Code TC2 – Hands-Free Liftgate
TSB 24-NA-039 – Dead Battery and / or Unwanted Liftgate Opening – The Problem
Some owners may find that their vehicles will not start because of a low voltage or dead battery. Owners may or may not also find the power liftgate has opened on its own, without any buttons being pushed or the owner commanding it.
The Technical Service Bulletin Describes the issue as:
Some customers may comment of a no crank due to a low or dead battery. This battery draw condition is more likely to occur if the vehicle is left unlocked and/or the key fob is left inside the vehicle. Also, they may or may NOT have a complaint that when the key fob is near the outside of the liftgate, that the power liftgate will open on its own, without pressing any fob buttons or kicking under the bumper. Note: If the battery draw is being monitored, when the draw is duplicated, this issue will cause a battery draw well over 10 amps.

TSB 24-NA-039 – Dead Battery and / or Unwanted Liftgate Opening – The Cause
This specific set of issues can be traced back to an issue with the liftgate module sending a false wakeup command to the Body Control Module (BCM). The BCM inadvertently draws a large amount of current after being woken up, draining the battery. The issues present most commonly when a vehicle is left unlocked and a keyfob is left near the vehicle.
The Technical Service Bulleting describes the cause as:
The cause of these concerns is a combination of two faults:
1. An issue with the K171 Hands Free Liftgate module repeatedly sending a false wake up request to the BCM commanding the liftgate to open, but the power liftgate may or may not actually open, see Important statement below.
2. A BCM software concern that is magnifying the battery draw if the BCM receives a wake up request, which is more likely to occur when the vehicle is left unlocked and/ or a key fob is left inside the vehicle. The BCM wake up request doesn’t have to come from the K171 Hands Free Liftgate module to cause this issue, but that is the most common module that is waking up the BCM.
Important: For the power liftgate to actually open all of the following criteria must be meet before the power liftgate will actually open from the false hands free request:
1.) Vehicle must be in park.
2.) Power liftgate switch turned on (max or 3/4)
3.) Hands free setting in the radio must be turned on (open or open/closed)
4.) The fob is within 1 meter of the liftgate itself.
TSB 24-NA-039 – Dead Battery and / or Unwanted Liftgate Opening – The Fix
Dealers are to reprogram the BCM with new software that limits the battery drain. Dealer Technicians are also advised to replace the hands-free liftgate module if it was produced before October 2023; owners are advised to lock their vehicle when not in use and store the key fob away from the vehicle.
