General Motors is recalling select Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain models over concerns that their factor tires may separate and cause a loss of control.

GM has made headlines in recent months with recalls over fire risks with the Chevy Bolt EV’s battery packs. At least this time, though, the recall has nothing to do with the vehicle itself. GM is recalling certain 2021-2022 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain models that left the factory equipped with a specific type of Hankook tires. The recall states that the tires may have been manufactured with an insufficient amount of a curative agent, which could lead to tread separation.

The recall text says that if tread separation occurs, it could result in a loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of a crash. If you own a 2021-22 Equinox or Terrain with Hankook tires, you can expect to receive a letter shortly after September 20, 2021, to notify you of a fix if your vehicle is involved in the recall.

Dealers will inspect the tires’ DOT numbers and replace any found to be affected, free of charge. GMC Terrain owners can contact the automaker’s customer service line at 1-800-462-8782 and Chevy Equinox owners can call 1-800-222-1020 for more information. General Motors’ recall number for this issue is N212343560 and the NHTSA Campaign ID is 21V612000.
