I'm a tech at a gm dealership. I personally have done 20+ oil pumps on 5.3 and 6.2 ecotec3 v8's. Starts out as a powersteering pump type noise, then gets louder until they catastrophically fail. Poor design, outer race in the pump that the veins ride on has a thin spot where it pivots on a pin. Race cracks and the veins hit the ridge. I've seen pumps fail as early as 7k miles. There is a tab for the issue. Sometimes it will set code p06DD for oil pressure control solenoid.
