I have one. It works about 90% of the time for me. Range sent me a replacement but the new one has the same problem. They replied with: " Often times from what we have seen it could be related to any onstar reports or vehicle checks that may be occurring while driving." I have turned off location sharing and don't actively have onstar but see it sometimes connect. I'm not sure about turning off the vehicle checks. Anyone else have the same problem?

I have the same cover on mine and it works really well. It's not completely leak-proof but it only lets in a few drops even in the worst storms. I'd feel safe storing luggage and driving through a thunderstorm with it.
Using scrcpy (open source) you can mirror your phone's screen on your PC giving you full use: https://github.com/Genymobile/scrcpy
Did you try using the USB-C port instead when you were having trouble with the regular USB? I primarily use USB-C for my android, it appears to have a very stable connection and faster charging.
Your best bet for the value is going to be the Viofo A119 V3: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7 Anker also makes a low-cost dashcam that is very good: https://www.amazon.com/Dashcam-Dashboard-Resolution-Nighthawk-Wide-Angle/dp/B07DF8MQX1 If you're looking for dual front and back, Viofo A129: https://www.amazon.com/Viofo-Dashboard-Camera-Vision-G-Sensor/dp/B07CT6JPYW/ As mentioned above, you can't go wrong with a Blackvue but they are more expensive: https://www.blackboxmycar.com/collections/blackvue/products/blackvue-dr590w-2ch-dash-cam?variant=6844741287991
