  1. I have a 1999 Silverado 5.3 LT with the towing package (which includes the trans cooler). I don't tow things other than a bike rack ... wanted the package for the cooler.nAbout 230,000 miles. Over the past few years, I've been periodically chasing down an oil leak, and it IS leaking less now after changing the valve cover gaskets, the o-rings on the cam and crank sensors, the oil pressure sending unit, and the oil pan gasket. The trans shop insists that it is the rear main seal that is still leaking... about $800 to replace separately, or a few hundred more than a full trans rebuild. The trans is fine ... for a while I was thinking perhaps I should proactively rebuild the transmission, but that (with the rear main seal) would run about $3300. It is not leaking a lot ... a few drops a day. Doesn't use any noticeable oil compared with when it didn't leak (maybe one quart between changes). I just hate leaks. THink it might be worth changing the seal ... or am I just wasting money if the trans is toward the end of its life? I notice nothing wrong with the trans, but don't know how long they last. Or just let it leak? All thoughts are appreciated.
  2. I tried searching and could not find a definitive answer ... is it possible to find the right size o-ring to re-seal a Crankshaft Position Sensor (and perhaps the Camshaft Sensor) if it is leaking, or should I just plan to replace the whole part? If I replace the part, does it need programming? Mine is a 1999 Silverado LT 5.3. I was able to see that it IS leaking (there may be more leaks, but definitely is leaking through the CPS). About 225,000 miles or so. Thank you!
  3. I have not posted in a while ... I hope this does not come off as a stupid question. My current truck is a '99 Silverado "new style" 3-door extended cab LT. Excellent condition, about 220,000 miles. Already did much of the mechanical issues, such as water pump, radiator, locking rear axle. Stereo is an Alpine single DIN with bluetooth, HD and XM radio, and a subwoofer, so sound it good (but no backup camera, etc.). Drives and runs fine. My wife's brother says now is "the" time to look at new trucks, though I am not in any hurry. I am just wondering your opinion on mine vs a new double cab or crew cab. I want to keep the 6-1/2 foot bed, which means the overall length is about 19" longer than mine. The double cab is only about 4" longer ... but when I sit in the back seat of the double cab, it seems much less comfortable than mine - like the seat back is more upright. Am I imagining that the crew is that much more comfortable, before even considering leg room? Any other thoughts? Thanks
