John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 2-20-2018 General Motors will not build and import its next premium crossover in China, as it now does with the Buick Envision. As we began reporting in 2015, General Motors opted to build in China and import the Envision rather than produce it in North America. The majority of Buicks are now made outside of the United States, and actually, outside of North America. We had assumed that General Motors might continue this trend with its newest premium crossover, the Cadillac XT4. However, the site of this new compact crossover will be the Kansas City, Kansas Fairfax assembly and stamping plant. “The Fairfax team earned this investment because of their commitment to built-in quality and their focus on the customer,” Gerald Johnson, Vice President of GMNA Manufacturing and Labor Relations, said in a release. “We are excited to help bring the first-ever Cadillac XT4 to market.” Kansas Gov. Jeff Coyler commented on the new plant, saying, "This investment supports jobs and shows that our state’s skilled workforce is strong. We are pleased with this announcement and that GM continues to invest in the great state of Kansas.” KSHB Kansas City News reports that this is welcome news in a place where Harley Davidson has announced plans to close. The new Cadillac XT4 will be smaller than the current XT5 (formerly SRX) which is by far Cadillac's top seller now. Presently, SUVs make up more than 50% of Cadillac's sales and with the new XT4 non-car models will likely approach 75% by the end of 2019.

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 9-14-2017 GM just had its best-ever August in China. With sales of 328,425 total vehicles sold under all GM brands, GM's China sales now top its U.S. sales by more than 20%, which were 275,552. But what is GM selling there? In order of brand sales, here is the breakdown for August: - Buick = 103,277 Total. Half are sedans. The new Envision crossover is one of GM's vehicles sold in both markets - Baojun = 82,658 Total. Mostly Crossovers and wagons. The Baojun 510 above is GM's top-selling crossover in China. With 33,000 sold in August, it tops every crossover GM sells in the U.S. - Wuling = 80,771 Total. Mostly the Hong Guang Minivan used as a limo and ride-share service vehicle. The newest variant is shown above. 34K sold in August. - Chevy = 46,705 Total. Sedans are slightly ahead of crossovers. The Equinox is sold in China now (just starting). - Cadillac = 15,014 Total. We hear a lot about GM's success in China with Caddy. The numbers are still tiny, but growing. The XT5 (used as a limo) is about 40% of sales. ATS and CT6 the rest.

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 10-21-2016 General Motors announced today that its Buick division sales have reached one million units. That is a huge number, but Buick is only selling slowly in the U.S. market. So where are the sales coming from? Every GM-Trucks.com fan knows it is China. We were amazed to discover that GM now sells five times more Buicks in China than in the U.S. In roughly the same time frame GM sold about 2.3 million cars in the U.S. in total (including all brands). That means that GM's China business is roughly half of its U.S sales now. What is most interesting is that GM is growing its sales by about 23% in china. Here in the U.S. GM (and most brands) have relatively flat sales. With GM now importing the Envision crossover to the U.S. from China the company's present and future seemed closely tied to its success in that country. Being fans of GM, it a positive thing that the company is now the number two automaker in that market and seems headed for long term success there and in the home market as well.

GM is also planning to invest about a half-billion U.S. dollars in a joint venture in China to produce green cars. All automakers doing business in China are required by Chinese law to have a Chinese-owned J.V. partner. Just as an aside, image how quickly our economy would be boosted if we required the same of any Chinese company doing business in the U.S. The Economic Times reports that the plant GM is planning would be able to produce 200,000 green cars per year. Just to give some perspective on that number, there were only 123,000 electrified vehicles sold in all of the U.S. market in 2015, and that number is not increasing. The Toyota Prius hybrid, the best-selling green car on the planet, sells at about a 200,000 unit annual pace in the U.S. Vehicle image is the Chevy Sail EV.

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 8/24/2015 General Motors is investing $1 Billion in India to make the region its "Global Export Hub." This according reports in Financial Times. GM is hoping to boost its tiny two-percent market share in that country's auto market and to also build cars inexpensively for export from India to other markets. GM plans to locally produce Chevy models specific to the needs of the region. GM is also planning to invest about a half-billion U.S. dollars in a joint venture in China to produce green cars.
