GM-Trucks.com can exclusively report that the 2022 GMC HUMMER EV will allow owners to start and drive the vehicle using only their phone.

Missed our report yesterday on how the HUMMER EV’s four wheel steering system works? Check it out.

According to internal GM documentation that we’ve reviewed, the HUMMER EV Truck will be the first GM vehicle to be equipped with digital key technology. This allows owners to use their phone, (iPhone or Android) as the key to their vehicle.

The tech that allows this to happen will operate on Ultra-Wide-Band and Bluetooth Low Energy. The standard was designed by the Car Connectivity Consortium, of which General Motors is a member of. The standard is currently in version 2.0, which uses NFC as the communications method between the phone and the vehicle.  The HUMMER EV will launch with Digital Key 3.0 support, running on UWB/BLE.

Digital car keys will allow for a new age of vehicle sharing, access, and use.

The HUMMER EV will launch tonight at 8am.
