I just successfully enabled the remote start in my 2500HD. It came with a few snags.
I installed a brand new GM hood latch with switch. My vehicle already had the harness leading up to the hood latch with just a cap on the end of the harness.
In my experience GM fob (guts) are not specific to with remote start, or rear power liftgate (tahoe). I just bought new cases for my remotes. My old ones did not have the start icon. The new cases had the start icon and easily accepted the old guts. I tested RF with my Bartec TPMS tool and all buttons were giving signal.
I assumed it would be "plug and play". It was not. I used my Snap On Solus to attempt a remote re-program. Still no remote start.
I took the truck to GM dealer #1. A buddy of mine is a service writer, so he pulled me a favor and got it hooked up. The service writer said my vehicle did not have an option for remote start, and could not be programmed. He also told me I had the wrong remote(s) for my truck. This really was no favor to me.
I took my truck to GM dealer #2. Another buddy of mine worked there, but my discount was going to be as good as dealer#1. Again, he told me there was no option for enabling remote start in the BCM programming. He has done these in the past. The software option is there on his GM factory computer.
He went out on a limb and called GM. He did not give me the number, but he had to use his subscription password to get in. He explained that I used genuine GM parts to complete the job. They said that I would have had to have purchased a genuine GM "remote start kit" to get the software. They said there is an authorization code in the kit that allows the software update. Unfortunately, I did not have that code, because I bought the components separately. Finally after some smooth talking, GM agreed to release software. It took about 30 seconds. It updated my BCM software in the GM database.
The tech went back to my truck, and downloaded the BCM software, and there were several updates/changes. #1 My hood showed ajar in the dash. #2. My door dinger got less annoying. It stopped beeping with key in ignition and door open. #3, I had remote start.
What I learned: Buy the GM kit, not just the individual parts. Ensure that you have the GM authorization code. Install a hood latch and possibly wiring harness. Have GM dealer program it. $400 later, ($218 for the kit, $180 for programming) you'll have GM remote start.
