2014 GMC Sierra z71 4x4

Fm said my parents needed a new on star module because theirs was no good but they can’t get one because of back order of them. So I went and purchased used one from salvage yard, installed but it’s not linked to vehicle is. So I called on star and spoke to two different people. One said I have to take to Gm dealer to have programming done. And other said call tech support for hardware update? Which Is true? please help...parents are paying on star for months and can even use it Any help is greatly appreciated
