John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 3-4-2019 Chevrolet has made progress with dependability according to the most recent 2019 JD Power Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS). This study measures the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100) during the past 12 months by original owners of three-year-old model-year vehicles. The 2019 study covers model year 2016 vehicles. The study covers 177 specific problems arranged into eight major vehicle categories. A lower score reflects a higher quality level and GM's Chevrolet brand scored 115, finishing fourth behind Lexus, Porsche, and Toyota. Buick was fifth. GM models were on the podium and finished atop their segments throughout the study. No brand had more segment first, second, and third place models than GM. The Silverado HD scored best in the Heavy Duty Truck Segment. Silverado was second in the "Light Duty" Truck segment and Colorado and Canyon finished second and third in the Midsized Truck segment. The Buick Lacrosse earned the top score in its segment, as did the Verano. The Chevy Sonic scored best in the Small Car category. Oddly, the luxury Cadillac brand and premium GMC brand did not score as highly as the Chevy brand. Jump to the JD Power VDS here.

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 1-26-2018 Buick has earned a top spot on J.D. Power’s newest rankings. The new Total Ownership Experience Rankings will list automakers based on the combined scores a brand earns on five other J.D. Power lists. The five J.D. Power studies to be included are: Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL); Customer Service Index (CSI); Initial Quality Study (IQS); Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI); and Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS). Interestingly, Buick took the Mass Market award and Porsche the Luxury market award. We say “interestingly” because GM considers Buick a premium brand. Chevy would be a mass market brand to most observers. “J.D. Power has prided itself on being the voice of the automotive consumer for 50 years and we continue to examine every aspect of customers’ opinions on vehicle sales, quality and dependability, as well as dealership customer service,” said Doug Betts, Senior Vice President of Global Automotive at J.D. Power. “Addressing these areas effectively creates repeat buyers and brand advocates, so it’s important for manufacturers and dealers to listen, learn and continue to evolve with the times.” The information released by J.D. Power on this new award to Buick is thin. If more information becomes available, we will post the data as an addendum to this story. Click here for a detailed, honest video of the J.D. John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 11-14-2016 Buick topped Cadillac, and all other GM divisions in the just-released J.D. Power 2016 U.S. Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) Study. The study measures how satisfied owners are following the purchase experience. In the study, Buick was found to have the highest score among "mass-market" brands. However, Buick's score of 809 topped Cadillac's 807. Buick tied Mercedes-Benz in the study. Chevy and GMC also scored very high. In the mass-market segment, GM had three of the four top spots. John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 7/11-16 Chevrolet, GMC and Buick did very well this year in the 2016 J.D. Power & Associates Initial Quality Study (IQS). Cadillac, on the other hand, did not have a single vehicle that was first in its segments, nor did any Cadillac vehicles appear in second or third place. The IQS is a comprehensive owner survey that asks owners to report their experiences after 90 days of ownership. Chevy did best for GM. The Silverado, Equinox, Spark, and Tahoe led their categories. GMC's Terrain had a first place tie with the Equinox in the important compact crossover segment, meaning GM had the top two compact crossovers. This is the largest non-truck auto category now, so this is perhaps GM's biggest quality win in a long time. The Canyon, along with Colorado, were second in the midsize truck category (Nissan's Frontier was number one). Buick's LaCrosse and the Chevy Impala did well in the large car segment. Buick's imported Cascada tied for first in the compact sporty car category. Overall, Buick and Chevy are closing in on Toyota at the top of the nameplate rankings and GMC is above average. The real head-scratcher here is why Cadillac cannot even meet the industry average for initial quality. Anyone have a guess as to why Cadillac does so poorly on this ranking?

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 6/17/2015 In its latest 2015 Initial Quality Survey, J.D. Power and Associates ranks the Chevy brand ahead of both Lexus and Toyota. Chevy improved its number of reported problems per 100 vehicles from 106 to 101. That was enough to pass Toyota and Lexus, who both earn a 104 rating. Buick is in the hunt with a rating of 105. The overall winners this year is Kia (86) among mainstream brands, and Porsche (80) among low-volume specialty automakers. Only Kia and Hyundai are ahead of Chevy now among volume brands. The IQS asks buyers of vehicle less than 90 days old to report problems in defined categories. Over 84,000 owners were surveyed this year. As has been the case in recent years, voice recognition and Bluetooth problems are what owners report most.
