  • Approximately 3,067 vehicles in the United States are potentially affected.

Silverado / Sierra Roof Splitting – The Problem

Some new 2024 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickups may have roof panels that begin to split or crack on the passenger side.  The cracking, tearing, or splitting location is under the roof molding and is usually concealed from prominent view.

Unfixed, the issue may worsen, causing a safety issue, additional corrosion, and leaking into the cabin.

Silverado / Sierra Roof Splitting – The Fix

General Motors addresses this issue with a detailed inspection and a MIG welding repair method.

The beginning of the repair process- the ends of the split or crack have been drilled out
The first step in repairing the roof split is to drill out the ends of the crack to prevent additional spreading.

Dealers must carefully remove the passenger side molding and closely inspect the roof to identify the crack, tear, or split. If a condition is found, the ends of the crack, tear, or split must be drilled to prevent further spread. The roof is then to be MIG welded and repainted. The dealership will also apply anti-corrosion material and a seam sealer to the underside of the repair before being returned to the customer or sold.

While the repair isn’t pretty after being welded, dealerships will repaint the area and clear coat the entire roof, along with adding anti corrosion material and seam sealer.
