A new seatbelt-related recall with a fire risk has been announced.

GM is recalling its fresh-off-the-line 2019 and 2020 Silverado and Sierra pickups. The issue is related to the pyrotechnic seatbelt pretensioners that fire in the event of an accident. These are the hidden deices built into the assembly that immediately grabs your belt and pulls it super tight if the worst is to happen. The concern is the hot exhaust gas they create can cause the vehicle carpet to catch fire. Which is not a problem you want to add to your day in the event you crash so hard these puppies are in play.

Included in the recall are certain 2019-2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, and 2020 Silverado 2500, Silverado 3500, Sierra 2500, and Sierra 3500 trucks.

GM will notify owners via snail mail. Dealers will close off the opening in the pretensioner bracket at no cost to owners. GM has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267. GM’s number for this recall is N192270600. You can also look up your GM vehicle here to see if the recall applies to your specific truck.
