2016 Silverado 2500HD Steering woes
trpower replied to QueenGlamis's topic in 2015-2019 Silverado HD, Sierra HD & Medium Duty
My was the lash adjustment backing out. It was loose from very slow spee2ds to scary at high speed. There also was a computer flash done after the repair. Mine has the loctite at the threads, nut. Have over 25,000 miles on it and still tight. Seems like more than one issue going on with this steering. -

If you read the PIT 5501f it shows pictures, and how they do the fix. Mines still good at 42,000. If it's still covered don't worry about it. My neighbor bought a truck same time as me and his never loosened up. If you do it yourself and box has an issue might cause you some headaches with dealer. You will know in a hurry if it gets loose. Scary. My opinion is it was never torqued properly at factory. Shouldn't have come loose? -

That sure is a crappy service dept. My was fixed at 17,000 with the locktite repair and so far it has been good at 41,000 now. Keeping my fingers crossed. I personally think we need to verify any work done. I checked my lash adjustment nut and the blue locktit is visible. Sounds like that Chevy dealer needs a new service manager. I always make the service manager go for a test drive after repairs. Shame we can't trust people after what we spend on these trucks. My only gripe now is a shot tailgate bushing that allows the tailgate to drop slowly. That's gonna be 35 to 40 for a cappy design piece of plastic. -

I assume you had the fix with the loctite on the steering box adjustment screw. Can you tell if the screw has moved out again. Can you see it thru the wheel well or feel under the nut. I now have 18,000 miles on mine since fix and still tight. -

Sounds like an alignment issue. If you have the loose steering TSB it's pretty loose from 10:00 to 2:00. Scary. -

Go back and find the Technical Service Bulletin. Page 33 or 34. See if this is what your steering is doing. On this issue the steering box lash adjustment unscrew and the steering gets really loose. They have a fix and it worked on mine. I have about 11 or 12,000 since the fix. It's tight still. Read the tsb and take a copy with you to dealer. There's also a few computer flashes after the fix. Good luck. -

My dealer was good. Even talked to mechanic about the fix before he did it. Pretty crazy the act stupid. You should be able to reach in and feel under the nut on the steering box. Or maybe you can look over the tire at the box to see if it's unscrewed. Good luck. -

Bring the TSB about the loose steering. I now have almost 10,000 miles on my truck since the fix was done. Still tight. -

This is my second DMax. I still have my 2005 with 195000 miles on it. Still runs like the day I drove it off the lot. So I hsve been very happy with my trucks. I believe my lash adjustment came loose after a 25 mile trip in the back country in Idaho fishing. Lot of washboard roads. That shouldn't have loosened up but I noticed it a few hundred miles after that trip. Overall this is the only issue in 25000 miles so far. For a 1 ton rides great. Running about 20 + on highway mpg. I hope this truck continues like the 2005. Will be my last truck if it does. The right dealer is important. Do your homework before going in for service. I had all the current TSB on the service of the steering in my hand. If anyone's out of warrenty gm shows less than 2 hours to do that lash fix. Show them the estimated labor . -

The bleeder bolt they are talking about is probably the lash adjustment bolt that works loose and fluid leaks out . That's what mine did. Comes up the threads. I don't recall seeing a bleeder bolt. Will look next time when I have it on the lift. -

Are you talking about the recall on airbags? I had a computer reflash for that. The steering issue is a TSB. Mine was done at 17000 and at 24000 still tight. -

That sounds like a total different issue than the steering lash looseness that I had. Reading the DTC code in the TSB that you supplIed shows a sensor issue. I do know they had a few flashes after they fixed my steering they preformed. Maybe one for your issue ? Good luck. -

www.revbase.com/BBBMotor/TSb/DownloadPdf?id=199083 Mine was loose for about 200 miles. The warrenty will be extended on it because it was fixed at 17000. At least that's what the dealer said. You can look at the adjustment shaft and see if its backed out? Then there's some computer re flashes? -

The problem is not the nut turning . The threaded adjustment shaft unscrews. So the fix is clean the threaded shaft with brake cleaner, add loctite to threads and under the nut.You mark the nut to adjustment shaft with a scribed line so the nut doesn't turn . Adjustment doesn't change. -

This problem is that the adjusting shaft unscrew with the nylon nut locked on the shaft. So when you or the dealer does the fix they crank the lash adjusting shaft back down with the loctite on the theads and under the nut. Lash adjustment is back where it was when new. The TSB # PIT5501E has detailed pictures . If this is whats wrong with your steering box. -

The fix they do with the loctite on the lash adjustment shaft you can do your self. I think warrenty is 36000 miles. It's been a big issue . Mine done at 17000 seems fixed now. I believe who ever assembled the steering box didn't torque the nut properly at the factory. My steering didn't get loose until 40 miles of a washboard road in the mountains. Look up the TSB on it. Save yourself some money. Or push them to repair it under warrenty. The fix takes a few hours. -

I have about 5000 miles on mine since the fix on the steering. No issues. Drives great. Steers straight. I think most roads crown from center to the shoulder. So letting loose of the wheel it may pull to right. I know here in Idaho the highways are pretty sloped for run off. I am very happy with our 2016 1 ton duramax. Pleasure to drive. -

So far my only glitch has been the steering issue. Everything else is great. Mileage is good for a heavy 1 ton truck I am not a fan of DEF fluid but it is what it is. Seems to be hard to fill . Burps and makes a mess. But I can live with it. The truck is super quiet and rides great for a 1 ton. I am going to flush the power steering pump and re fill it with the cold climate fluid to get ready for winter here. It sometimes seems a little noisy. Is it related to the steering lash being loose I don't know? I plan on a 2000 mile trip next month and will see how the steering issue goes. Other than that I am satisfied with the purchase. Have never owned any other makes so I stick with GM trucks. I still own a 2005 hd Duramax with 195,000. Still runs like new.Have had almost no issues with it. But what a difference in ride and comfort between the new and old. -

In reading there's 2 ways to fix the steering looseness. The simple way is if the lash adjustment unscrewed it's self out of the top plate. The locknut doesn't turn. They clean the threads , apply a generous amount of blue locktite, crank it back down, torque to spec's and do the computer reprogramming. I can't see that they took my steering box out so I think this is what my repair consisted of. I talked to the mechanic before the job and he said something about disconnecting the steering link in the system. The service writer said they have to remove box. but I don't think my was removed? My was leaking a little fluid because I had it on my lift and saw it. When I wiggled my wheels it was scary how much looseness was in the steering. My lash adjustment stud has loosened or sure. I didn't look to see if there was a gap under the lock nut. I would have had to remove the wheel liner. About 20 or more screws. I know this because of removing the right side to change my fuel filter. Pain in butt but I did install the cut out to make the fuel filter change a little easier in future. I am changing my oil this week and will try and determine what was done. Box removed? I don't this so? Doesn't say on receipt it was removed. My box is not leaking steering fluid now that I can see. So I believe the nut and lash shaft had unscrewed. Maybe the guy that tightened the nut didn't do the job right at the steering box manuf? If the lock tite holds problems solved I hope? The stablitrac has always been full of issues. I found out this winter If you don't disable it 4x4 is almost useless when u spin a wheel. So If I know if 4x4 is needed disable it first. My buddy has a 2017 2500 hd duramax and loves it. But this year a lot of motor internal changes so I passed on it. Hopefully it's good for him. Good luck with your fix. -

From what I see the F removes the 2017 from the TSB. modoutlaw does your receipt from dealership show a computer flash for relearn and any current software? So far I am happy with steering but only have a few hundred miles on the truck since repairs. I requested the service writer drive with me before I took back the truck after repairs. We went for a short drive and everything was ok. He mentioned that GM was only giving them 1 hour to preform this repair. Thats not enough time? Don't know if this is true or not but that's not good.It is not the dealerships fault they are following GM's TSB PIT5501E . As long as they do everything that's listed on the TSB. My concern is that they won't be given enough time to properly repair it. If the lash has to be tightened it has to come off the truck they say. An hour is not going to do this. GM show 1.8 in the TSB as estimated times? Even that not enough time. i was able to see the locktite on the nut and stud so that much was done on my truck. It is very fustrating on a 65,000 truck. I usually don't buy the first years new systems. This truck has Digital Assist Steering.Connects into the computer. I think its new for the 2016. Has problems for sure. Trying to make ours trucks drive like a luxury car? I still have my 2005 Duramax and it's steering is great at 195,000. Good luck with your repair. Give them a chance to make it right. Then go from there. -

I have other friends that have had no problems. Lock tight should cure it if that's whats happening? Tack weld wouldn't go over good at the dealer. The lash may have to be adjusted. The service writer said they took my gearbox out, adjusted it and reinstalled? Told me if there's any more problems let them know. We will see. -

At 20000 miles my 2016 3500 HD also became very loose. I have the latest TSB PIT5559001 E&F in hand and have a next Tuesday appt with the dealer. See how it goes.
