I made this same connection: red to red and black to black. For some reason, my R8 isn't powering up. When I metered the pins, I got 0vdc. Is there a fuse for the plug going into the mirror? I checked all the fuse boxes and didn't see any blown. So I overlooked it, or maybe I don't have the power/fuse for the basic mirror?
