  1. I never noticed that there was no tranny dip stick. That's kind of odd. I don't have any leaks. Thankfully. It shows tranny temperature as normal all the time. 29K on truck. I wonder what the interval is on changing fluid and filter. Probably in owners manual
  2. My ACC will shut off usually due to ice or camera obstruction. Nice feature though.
  3. Do you know why these engines seem to consume oil? I'm curious about that as well. 28,000 miles and very regular oil changes are done with good synthetic oil and WIX XP filters. Is it because of the OCM (oil control valves?) I don't have any leaks and she doesn't blow the blues, but it must be burning it slowly somehow? Is it because of the DFM, and oil gets past the lifters into the combustion chamber. A guy would expect higher quality on such an expensive truck. I really liked that comparison chart on AFM vs DFM. Thanks again.
  4. Gee, I hope that my ten speed doesn't start that erratic hard shifting then ! So far so good. We have a 2500 mile trip coming up. Guess I'll be checking BOTH oils now. Tranny oil when warm after a days run, and engine oil level first thing in the morning. I always appreciate getting the CORRECT information. Thank you.
  5. Either way, I'm glad we have the 5.3 in the High Country with 10 speed auto. I was also told by salesman that only the 4x4's High Country were 10 speed autos. The 2WD were 8 speed. Is that correct?
  6. I stand corrected. Salesman told me it was an 8 speed and I never really checked, because we just turned around and came back to the dealer. We weren't impressed. The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Trail Boss has a 10-speed automatic transmission: The LT Trail Boss comes with a 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Custom Trail Boss has a 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission. Some say the 10-speed transmission is reactive and always seems to be in the right gear. Others say that while GM's 10-speed transmission has some challenges, they are manageable with proper maintenance. Thanks
  7. Thanks for clarifying all that !
  8. EARLY LS engines were pretty good. 6 bolt mains. Coil on each cylinder. Then they had to go to AFM and DFM. It's a scam. A money making scam. They KNOW they will fail. Shame on GM.
  9. Thank God I still have my 1975 square body. SO EASY to work on. The new ones? um no. You can't do anything to them except change oil, oil filter, cabin filter, air filter,........and that's about it. They don't want a guy to be "back yard" mechanics anymore. That old 350 in my square body 'told' me everything just by the sound of it. It was TOO GOOD. That's why you still see lots of 'em on the road - RUST and all !! Sucks fuel like a MF - 10 mpg loaded or empty . and EATS spark plugs but is dependable. I trust it MORE than my 2020. If my 2020 dies on the highway, it's tow truck time. I carry a spare mechanical fuel pump, an electronic control module for the HEI and some basic hand tools in the OLD Chevy. And glad I did. BOTH of those items failed, at different times but it was a very rare occurrence, if they did fail. Only happened once on both items. 10 minutes later - back on the road. You could easily get over 100,000 miles out of an old 350 if you treated it right. Oil changes etc. Easy.
  10. THEY DO consume more oil. A GM mechanic told me it was the lifter design related to DFM. I burn about a quart every 3000 miles. Zero leaks. Zero smoke. But it's getting burned. 28K. 5.3L 10speed. 4x4 L84 How efficient of GM ! I flip the oil at 3000 miles now. Crossing my finger the cam doesn't get ground down to a 'stick'.
  11. Does GM still use cylinder deactivation? Apparently GM is back in full swing manufacturing new 5.3's with Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM), which shuts down cylinders randomly. I'm not at all thrilled to learn that my brand new 2023 GMC 1500 came with DFM. (recent quote)
  12. It's because it destroyed lifters and cam. Regularly. POS. IT WILL NOT BE MISSED...............IF.........they do indeed delete it. It's a money maker in the service dept. BIG BUCKS to fix at a dealer.
  13. I'm not sure though if the tranny tail shafts are the same or not. That 'could' be another issue too as well as drive shaft length , mounting bracket, and on and on. Nothin's easy on these trucks.
  14. When we test drove the 6.2..with the 8 speed....before getting the 5.3 with ten speed auto.........the tranny was doing the same as what you said. Erratic, HARD shifts. Something was wrong from the get go. See if you can maybe find a totalled truck with a 10 speed in it with low miles. Service the tranny, front and rear seals, pan gasket, new fluid and do "whatever" reprogramming you need to do and that might be the cheapest BEST way to get away from the 8 speed POS and into a 10 speed. Just my 2 cents
