  1. Were working on getting an 86 k10 back on the road. The trans slips between gears and doesn't have a working OD. Does this sound like a master rebuild kit fix, or should we be looking for another trans and just swap it in. I'm sure we could work through rebuilding it, but this would be my first time trying to fix one. Anyway, just wondering what to expect. Things like, how do you know if the pump is good, torque converter, any hard parts that could be broke that would save me the cost of the rebuild kit in case I just have to replace the trans anyway...etc... Thanks!
  2. So I did a motor swap , dropped a 305 v8 in linked with a 700r4 tranny. All gears worked before the swap , but now I only have 1st and sometimes second gear but I have to manually shift it . Park , neutral, and reverse work perfectly fine . My fluids are full, I've tried everything I know and I'm at a loss . Can someone help me out?
  3. I have a 92 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 5.7 350TBI currently bolted up to the 700r4 transmission. I need a new engine & I found one it's also 5.7 350TBI bolted up to a 4L60e transmission out of a 95 Chevrolet Silverado extended cab . Will the 350 out of the 95 work in my 92 ? Or will I have to change ECM. Wires ECT since one is cable & one is computer . Please Help .
  4. I recently put a new engine in my handme down 92 Sierra 1500. The "new" engine is from a 96 Tahoe which is an issue because the tahoe had a 4l60e. The engine harness is from the 96 so the connectors that go to the transmission are useless since the sierra has a 700r4. I want to know can this engine and transmission work properly together even. Also can the 700r4 tv cable work with the new vortec tbi. thanks for your time
  5. Hello all. I'm in the market for a 1 ton truck from this generation of Chevys. There's one in particular I found somewhat locally, but I'm a bit confused. It's a 4x4 dually, 7.4ltr engine, auto tranny with under 75k miles on the dash. Upon inquiry, the seller sent me additional photos. One of the photos was a close up of the dash. Now, in my findings, the only transmissions available for the 3500 were the standard 4 speed, and the TH400 automatic. However, on the dash, the gear indicator had the 1, 2 , D, and OD (D with the circle around it). Was there another overdrive transmission offered in the 3500 series that I'm mistaken on? The other OD transmissions of the era were the 700r4 and the 2004r, but I wouldn't think they would put either of those into a heavy hauler dually pickup because those were not rated for that kind of duty. It's also my understanding that the 4l80e was not offered until some year after the 1990 model year. I haven't been able to inspect the truck in person yet so I can't check the pan to tell me for sure what's in there. If it's one of the weaker transmissions, I don't know that I want to waste time driving more than an hour away to look at it, unless my perception of those transmissions is incorrect. Anybody have any idea what I'm missing? Otherwise, I'm in this market because I'm looking for a reliable hauler for occasional work purposes, to trailer my project vehicles, and other general utility purposes. Am I on the right track with pursuing something from this lineup?
  6. Hello everyone, I'm new to the site. I have a 1988 GMC Sierra 1500 long bed pickup. It has a 305 Tbi with a turbo 400 and 3.42 rear end I have a 1993 350 Tbi engine and I want to install it with a 700R4 transmission. I will have to get a different PROM (chip) for the 350 and 700r4......."ASDU" i think I have 3 speed cluster in it now. Will I have to change it?...The 700R4 is a 4 speed What all do I have to change for the engine and transmission to fit? ( drive shaft, and etc) I have a 1991 GMC Sierra 1500 5.0L engine, 700r4 transmission for a donor truck Will I have to change the wiring harness under the hood? or all of it?
  7. Hi Everyone, Truck is an 84 shortbed K10 with 350/700R4, entirely stock except for the wheels and tires. About two months back, and for reasons related to my stupidity, I accidently ran the trans low on fluid. I learned of this while in O/D on the highway at 60 mph, when I suddenly realized the TC was no longer able to keep a lock. The engine started going up and down, the TQ unlocking and locking. I saw what appeared to be white smoke coming out behind the truck. Pulled it off the highway, checked the fluid and there was no fluid registering on the dipstick. Filled it back up and away I went. I was quite scared that I had destroyed it, but to my surprise discovered that the truck drove fine. TQ locked up as it always did, trans shifts as it always does, firm and smooth, etc. I have even towed the 6x12 enclosed uhaul trailer a couple of times since then. What I've only recently realized is that when I'm going uphill, particularly long stretches of uphill, the truck struggles big time. It's as if the motor is completely gutless, and cannot get the truck up the hill. The trans kicks down to keep the engine in the power band, and the engine runs like a champ, but the truck just slows and slows until the top of the hill. I also see the white smoke that I saw during the earlier empty fluid issue if the hill is long enough, and then a burning smell. After I crest the hill, all is good. Shifts normal, lock up is normal, down hill and on flat stretches everything is fine. Engine is plenty strong from a stop and up to highway speeds. The smoke makes me think of the trans when i had the fluid issue, but I've never heard of a trans seem to "slip" while not slipping. Does that even make sense? While the truck has never been a power house, it has always gotten itself up a hill. Has anyone seen this before? Is the TQ bad? Or the whole thing? Or am I barking up the wrong tree? I have not yet changed the fluid and filter, so I don't know what's in the bottom of the pan. That's on my list for today or tomorrow. Thank you, Don
