John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 10-19-2017 In the end, the union that represents hourly workers at the Cami plant in Ontario Canada dropped the requirement that the Cami plant be the lead plant for Equinox, GM's hottest non-truck vehicle. That move would have been the best guarantee of future jobs at the location. So, like many things, the strike ended up being all about money. The Candian workers will get a raise and a bonus, which has the practical effect of moving them even further from the lower-paid Mexican workers that threaten their jobs and the Candian plant's future. GM did throw in a perq that will made it a bit harder to move the plant, but it is small potatoes. “We weren’t able to secure a lead production letter from General Motors, but we were able to improve some of our programs that would soften the event if be designated the lead plant for Equinox if there in fact is a layoff or closure in the future,” Unifor Local 88 President Dan Borthwick said in a phone interview with Bloomberg. The strike lasted a full month.

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 3-16-2018 Despite a production slowdown due to Canadian workers who went on strike recently, the all-new Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain have been putting up impressive sales numbers in a very important segment. The compact crossover is now the defacto family car in America and has overtaken pickups as the top-selling segment. The old Equinox and Terrain had their charms but were not really built to the same design specs that the Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4, and Honda CR-V were. The new designs are spot-on. The changes have brought big sales to GM. Through the first two months of 2018, the Chevy Equinox has earned 50,458 unit sales and the Terrain has found 17,385 buyers. Compare these numbers to the Nissan Rogue's 74,303, the Toyota RAV4's 56,522, and the Honda CR-V's 50,178 and we see Chevy in the third slot overall having passed Honda. And Equinox sales are up 20% over last year at this time. Only Nissan's Rogue has that same growth rate. By comparison, the Ford Escape is down 17% this year so far and has sales of less than 40K units. Jeep's Cherokee rings in at under 30K units year to date with sales about flat.

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 10-16-2017 The striking workers at the Ingersol, Ontario Canada Equinox plant, called the Cami plant, are voting today on a deal that could put them back to work as early as tonight. The new deal includes percentage raises as well as lump sum payments. CBC also reports that the deal includes provisions to ensure the work does not move to plants with lower-paid workers in Mexico. The deal's increases in pay highlight that long-term, the situation in Canada will only move farther from parity with the costs that GM pays to have its vehicles built in Mexico. Workers left the plant September 17th. The plant builds GM's most popular non-truck vehicle, the all-new 2018 Equinox.

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 10-14-2017 A tentative agreement between Unifor and General Motors may end the strike at the Cami plant in Ontario. The plant manufactures the hottest-selling crossover GM offers, the Chevy Equinox. Terms of the deal were not made public. The question we want to know is have the Canadian workers succeeded in locking up the job security they hoped for? The workers and the union have made it clear that one of the prime reasons for the strike was to secure a promise from GM that more of the work would not be moved to Mexico. We will update the GM-Trucks.com community once the details are made available.

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 10-12-2017 The strike at the General Motors Cami plant in Ontario, Canada is about jobs. Canadian workers who build the Chevy Equinox primarily for export to the United States feel as if their jobs are threatened by GM's plant in Mexico. "Feel" is realy an understatement. GM has moved jobs from the Cami Canada plant to its Mexico facilities. The union that represents the workers in the Cami plant have made it clear that the strike is about job security. Unfortunately, GM is fed up with delays to its top-selling non-Silverado model in North America. According to Reuters, GM is now making plans to move the jobs the union had hoped to protect to Mexico if the strike does not end soon. "GM just told us today that they are going to ramp up production in Mexico," Unifor President Jerry Dias told Reuters. "They have declared war on Canada."

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 10-4-2017 Chevy's new Equinox comes with seats designed to be both stylish and stain-resistant. In addition to the scuff and wear-resistant leather that is optional, Equinox also has a seat material very similar to dark denim jeans (dungarees where I come from). “The fabric is very durable, while the color and even the pattern help hide dirt and stains,” said Mara Kapsis, color and trim designer for the 2018 Equinox. “It’s also very easy to vacuum and clean, which saves owners time and helps keep the interior looking great year after year.” Many families buy their vehicles with interiors that will match expected stains. When my family was young, that meant buying cars with "Chocolate Chip Cookie" colored interiors. What say you GM-Trucks.com faithful? Is shopping for an interior with stain resistance in mind goofy or good planning?

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 9-18-2017 The General Motors plant that assembles GM's hottest crossover just went on strike. The Cami plant in Ontario went on strike last night. The Local 88 Union of Auto Workers is seeking better wages and benefits. The strike comes as GM's hot new Equinox is gaining critical market share. After being in last place among all leading automakers in the largest automotive segment, GM's new Equinox has suddenly become very competitive. Last month, the Equinox came within striking distance of passing the Honda CR-V in sales. - Related - What do GM's Automakers earn?

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 9-12-2017 In a hopeful sign for Chevy's non-pickup truck sales, the all-new Equinox has leaped forward in sales. One year ago, the Equinox was selling at a rate of about 15,000 units per month. That is a lot of crossovers, but not relative to the potential size a hit would have earned. The Rogue, CR-V and RAV4 were selling at more than double that rate. For August, the Equinox jumped 84% in sales versus the old model on sale last August. With 28,245 sold, the Equinox topped the Ford Escape's 23,631 units sold. It is not hard to figure out where the Escape's 5,000 less units went. The Equinox looks even better when one considers the slowing sales of the all-new Honda CR-V, the former sales leader of this important segment. The CR-V sold "only" 30,960 units in August, down about 6,000 from last August. The General has a tough hill to climb to pass the current sales leader, the Toyota RAV4 which sold over 43,000 units in August. Unless you consider that GM also sold about 9,000 GMC Terrains in the month.

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 8-28-2017 GM seems to be downplaying its towing capabilities in non-full-size truck offerings. The first, and most surprising revelation was that Chevy is only rating the new Colorado ZR2 at 5,000 pounds for towing, regardless of its engine. That means the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro's gasoline engine's 6,400 lb towing rating tops the diesel ZR2. Toyota has for years been conservative in its tow ratings and adopted the current standards prior to GM. We doubt this is specmanship on Toyota's part. The newest towing surprise was the all-new 2018 Equinox diesel compact crossover. The new diesel engine costs almost $4,000 more than the base engine in the Equinox. Yet, its towing is limited to 1,500 pounds, the same rating almost all compact crossovers come with (the CR-V for example). Where is the diesel towing advantage we often see in larger pickups and sport utes? Perhaps Chevy assumes with these two diesel vehicles owners don't care much about towing. That would not be our impression based on posts to the ZR2 clubs* we participate in. What say you GM-Trucks.com faithful? No big deal, or sort of surprising? John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 7-12-2017 The 2014 Chevy Malibu sedan and Equinox crossover are near the top of the list of popular high-depreciation cars in a study done by iSeeCars.com. The Malibu's depreciation is 1.23-times greater than the average for vehicles in general. The study finds that the average price of a 2014 Malibu is just $14,622, reflecting a 43% depreciation over just three years. The Equinox is not far behind the Malibu with an average price of just $17,200, reflecting a 41% depreciation over three years. These are cars still under the original GM warranty. Even more incredible is the deal that shoppers of used Cadillac CTS sedans should expect. After just three years, the CTS is worth less than half its original value. iSeeCars pegs the average 2014 CTS price at just $27,537. That is a whopping 52% depreciation rate reflecting a depreciation that is about one and a half times that of the average vehicle. Silverado and Sierra both hold their value better than the industry average. After three years, they have depreciated roughly 29% compared to the average of about 35%. See the full study at this link.

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 6-20-2017 Chevrolet's new Equinox plays a bit of catch-up with its new Equinox by adding Surround Vision. This technology allows a top-down view of the entire area around the vehicle. Many automakers offer the technology already, including GM on other models. However, the Equinox is Chevy's entry into the largest single market (yes, even bigger than the truck segment), that being the affordable compact crossover class. This is America's new family car and it makes good sense for Chevy to offer the technology. Chevy mentions back-over accidents in the video, but fails to mention if the Equinox offers automatic reverse braking when objects are detected, as some of its competitors do. Chevy does offer forward collision prevention on Equinox, but as an option. Toyota's RAV4 and the upcoming Nissan Rogue offer that technology on all trims at no added cost. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0LNJe_GizY

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 5-22-2017 Chevy announced today that the all-new Equinox will be 10% lighter than the outgoing model. The new design sheds an incredible 400 pounds compared to the previous generation. In automotive design that is an insane amount of weight to be cut. The way GM did it was by starting with a fresh sheet of paper. The new Equinox is much more in the style of the Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forester, and other mainstream compact crossovers than the vehicle it is replacing, which was bigger in legroom and cargo area, but just a smidge. The real savings came from aa new platform and by using more high-strength steel. GM says the new Equinox, " ...body structure design was optimized with a mixed-material strategy for strength and low weight. More than 80 percent of the Equinox’s body structure is composed of high-grade steel materials, with high-strength steel comprising nearly 20 percent." The benefits of lighter weight are better handling and lower fuel consumption. We have not driven a new Equinox yet. GM has not put any in our media fleet. However, we can comment on the fuel economy. We checked out the stats at the EPA's site for the old and new Equinox and the fuel economy gains are impressive. For example, the outgoing 2.5-liter AWD Equinox had an EPA-estimated Combined rating of 23 MPG. The new, 2-liter turbocharged Equinox has a 24 MPG rating. Much more power with a measurable fuel efficiency improvement. A better and more impressive comparison of the old base model is to the new 1.5-liter turbo, which earns a 26 MPG rating with AWD. We could not help but check out the fuel economy of the segment leading CR-V while at the site. The bad news for GM is that the Honda earns a 29 MPG rating when equipped with its 1.5-liter turbocharged engine. 3 MPG is a big delta when comparing crossovers of this type.

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 3-14-2017 Chevrolet will add active aerodynamics to the new 2018 Equinox compact crossover. With compact crossovers now the largest overall vehicle segment (yup, passed trucks last year), every automaker needs to make our new family vehicles more fuel efficient. Nick Lico, Global Aerodynamics development lead, says that is a problem for designers, since, "...the box-like shapes of crossovers and SUVs are not conducive to aero efficiency." To make the best of this challenging situation, Chevy will install active aerodynamics to the affordable Equinox. The front of the 2018 Equinox will have electronically controlled upper and lower grille shutters. The idea is that in certain situations, when engine cooling needs are reduced, the shutters close, making the airflow around the Equinox more efficient and thus, reduces fuel usage. Our question to the membership is simple: Are such measures a smart design or a dumb one given that this system will be destroyed in a minor front-end collision? Sure, once the deductible is passed it won't matter in the short term to owners, but more expensive to repair systems raise costs in the long run. What say you?

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 1-30-2017 The older Equinox was manufactured in Canada at GM's CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ontario (roughly 80 miles from Detroit, Cleveland, and Buffalo). That plant will see a layoff of about 625 jobs as the all-new Equinox begins production in Mexico. What we found interesting in a Detroit Free Press news story updating the already announced news were the comments from the labor union, Unifor, that represents the Candian auto workers at GM. Jerry Dias, the President of Unifor, said, "The CAMI announcement is a shining example of everything wrong with NAFTA, it must be re-negotiated. It is imperative that we have trade rules that help ensure good jobs in Canada." Dias says that the Equinox' move "Reeks of corporate greed" and is due to a lower labor cost in Mexico compared to Canada. Add Canadian workers and their union representatives to those that think NAFTA no longer works for North America.

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 12-7-2016 GM sent out a blurb this week on the new Chevy Equinox. If the Equinox was not one of GM's most important upcoming launches we may have skipped this news. The compact crossover is now the largest non-truck market (according to GM) and the Equinox has been way underperforming this year. Its sales are typically half that of the top models in the segment. That could change, and we are rooting for the Equinox to succeed. GM says the new crossover will start at $24,475 including destination when it goes on sale in about two or three months. GM had previously announced a Q1 start for the all-new 2018 model Equinox but had not said when the 1.6-liter turbo-diesel version would be available. GM added that tidbit this week as well and the date is Q2 2017. If you have not been following the compact crossover market closely, the entry price Chevy chose is right in line with the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Entry prices are nothing more than marketing tools in general, so we will be interested to see how a well-equipped AWD Equinox stacks up to the CR-V and RAV4.

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 12-6-2016 Chevrolet announced that its new 9-speed automatic transmission will debut on the 2017 Chevy Malibu 2.0-Turbo, in the Cruze Diesel for '17, and then the Equinox Diesel will also get the new transmission for 2018 when it is ready. So far, Chevy has only qualified the new Chevy Malibu with the 9-speed so we have compared that car to its peers to see how the new transmission will help the Malibu in this very competitive segment. First, the intangibles. Chevy says (and we believe) that the new transmission's first gear contributes to better off-the-line performance. Quickness is not a high priority for most midsize sedan buyers, but remember, Chevy is pairing the most powerful Malibu it makes with the new 9-speed. This car will compete with the Honda Accord V6, which uses an automatic 6-speed and offers an optional manual 6-speed. The Accord is a fast car thus equipped and having tracked that car, we can tell you it is surprisingly fun to toss around. By moving to the turbo engine and 9-speed the 33 MPG Highway / 26 MPG Combined 2017 Malibu could have matched up well with the 33 MPG Highway and 25 MPG combined the Honda Accord V6 Auto 6AT currently produces. The Nissan Altima with its V6 engine and CVT transmission earns a 32 MPG highway rating and a 26 MPG Combined rating. We say "could have" because the 2017 Malibu is rated with Premium fuel, not the regular that the V6 Accord and Altima use. The 250 hp of the Malibu 2.0T is also significantly less than the 278 hp the Accord offers and the 270 hp the Altima comes with. The Camry will be all-new for next year and its drivetrains are expected to change so we left it out of this comparison. When matched with the diesels Chevy is about to launch, we expect big MPG numbers. However, for 2017, Chevy brings a new Malibu drivetrain that is down on power compared to its peers, only matches the current offerings mileage ratings, and uses more expensive fuel than its competitors. Note: All MPG numbers in this story are the official numbers at www.fueleconomy.gov.

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 11-010-2016 Tha all-new 2018 Chevy Equinox arrives in less than four months. Next Friday will be the first public showing of the new crossover at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The new Equinox cannot come a moment too soon. Car have jumped the shark, and the Equinox sales have dropped to about half that of its competitors' crossovers. Alan Batey, president of GM North America and brand chief, Global Chevrolet, commented on the new Equinox' release, saying, “The all-new 2018 Chevrolet Equinox is a modern SUV sized and designed to meet the needs of the compact SUV customer. We’ve got the strongest truck business in the industry and we’ve reinvigorated our car lineup with Volt, Cruze and Malibu. Now we are focusing on growing our crossover/SUV business, starting with the Chevrolet Equinox.” For more details including the new diesel engine offering, please see our prior story.

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 9-23-2016 GM was one of the first automotive companies to begin speaking openly about the shift away from cars. Why not? After all, its low-volume performance cars aside, the general has been behind the industry leaders in terms of car sales for a long time. Perhaps this was just the shift GM needed to become relevant again in a high volume vehicle segment besides trucks. The Chevy Equinox is critical to the brand's financial health and long-term success. In its announcement today, Chevy laid out the ways in which the new compact crossover will stay in the fight. Most important is the overall size and shape of the Equinox. The Equinox shaves about a half inch in width and five inches in length off its current body, putting it in the same size box as its peers. It also loses about 400 pounds. These are good things, because, although more space is always welcome, the current Equinox has been larger than its peers in the segment and it didn't fit the mold. There is always a place for trend setters, but that's not what the outgoing Equinox is. And sales have fallen off a cliff. Better to toe the line and wear the uniform. Chevy's focus groups like the new design, and John Cafaro, executive director, GM Design, said, “Customers who previewed the vehicle early on had a strong emotional response to the sleek and sophisticated exterior design." The new 1.6-liter diesel engine option will attract media attention because the auto press loves diesel family vehicles. Almost nobody else cares, and they have never sold well in the U.S. GM didn't give any numbers, but, as always, diesel power's ability to put up good highway numbers when combined with (just) front-wheel drive will allow GM to attract attention. Will the Equinox diesel have a higher combined MPG, or better cost per mile than segment leaders? Doubtful, but possible. In any case, diesel vehicle advocates love to write comments under stories, so we are as happy as anyone to see GM offering the new spark-less engine. Dramatically more important than the diesel will be the two gasoline turbos GM will introduce, a 1.5-liter and a 2.0-liter. Sub-two-liter, boosted engines have just recently matured and companies like Honda, Ford, and Hyundai have engines like this on the market now in small vehicles that work perfectly. We suspect GM will as well. Interestingly, GM opted for a nine-speed auto transmission. Although it sounds like that will help with fuel economy, the fact is that geared transmissions are done in this segment and the CVTs will be the fuel economy leaders. It is hard to understand why GM made this move. Infotainment will be what we expect today, but keep in mind this vehicle is six months away. Safety is key to the family vehicle segment and GM is one of the only automakers who don;t have a Top Safety Pick + compact crossover. GM hopes to rectify that with OPTIONAL advanced crash prevention. We highlight optional because all 2017 Toyota crossovers will have that technology standard. Toyota is ahead in sales, already has TSP+-rated crossovers, and every single article you read about GM's vehicles's safety will be pointing out that GM charges families extra for safety (or should). No news on pricing yet. GM says the new 2018 Equinox will come to U.S. dealers in Q1 of 2018.

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 8-29-2016 General Motors will recall 2013 Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain crossovers because their windshield wiper systems are not compatible with water. The NHTSA recall notice states that "In the affected vehicles, the ball joints in the windshield wiper module may corrode and wear over time, possibly resulting in one or both of the windshield wipers becoming inoperative." To see if your vehicle is part of this recall, please visit this link. There is no hurry to get to a dealer. GM has not yet found a solution according to the NHTSA information. There is also a recent recall for Equinox related to the key becoming stuck in the ignition. You can read the full details of both here. GM is not the first major crossover manufacturer to recall its vehicles because water can harm the windshield wipers. Toyota recently Recalled the RAV4 for a similar issue.

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 2/12/2015 Chevy took the wraps off the new 2016 Equinox today at the Chicago Auto Show. The Equinox gets a new nose with new projector beam headlamps. More importantly, the Equinox gets a new larger touchscreen inside and safety is taken up a notch. Rear view cameras are now standard on all Equinox models and rear-cross traffic and side blind zone alert is available. The timing of this change is perfect for Chevy. The Equinox just had a great sales month posting up its best January sales number ever. Chevy says the Equinox captures fully nine percent of the important compact crossover market.
