Ever since the GMC HUMMER EV hit the streets, fans have been asking one major question: What if GM made a mid-size version? Today, General Motors finally answered that question by pulling the cover off the striking GMC HUMMER X pickup and SUV concepts.
The reveal took place as GM officially opened the doors to its massive new Advanced Design Studio in Pasadena, California, a 148,000-square-foot facility dedicated to envisioning the next 10 to 20 years of automotive mobility.
From the Edition 1 to the HUMMER X
We have had the keys to our own HUMMER EV SUT Edition 1 for almost four years now, and it remains one of the most outright fun vehicles we have ever driven. The sheer power and utility of that supertruck truly reshaped how we view what vehicles are capable of doing on and off the pavement. But the Edition 1 is undeniably massive, and that extreme weight can occasionally catch you off guard. Case in point: we actually managed to get our supertruck completely sunk and stuck in a soft dirt and gravel parking lot. Its immense weight anchored it so deeply into the soft ground that it ultimately required an 80,000-pound front-end loader just to pull it free.
The idea of taking that same unmatched capability and shrinking it down into a far more agile, mid-size footprint is exactly why the HUMMER X concept is so compelling. While it is strictly a design study right now, it serves as a radical testbed for new manufacturing technologies, extreme off-road geometry, and modular EV design that addresses the current supertruck’s biggest vulnerability: scale.

Built Differently: FLEX FAB Manufacturing
If the HUMMER X looks different from anything currently in the GMC lineup, that is entirely by design. To build the concept, GM Advanced Engineering utilized something called FLEX FAB.

Think of FLEX FAB like 3D printing, but for metal. Instead of using massive, expensive stamping tools, it allows for fast, on-demand production. This manufacturing method gave the HUMMER X its distinct, rugged aesthetic: a flat-topped silhouette, radiused edges, laser-welded seams, and exposed precision bolts. It looks like an honest, functional piece of heavy machinery.
The interior follows the same modular logic. The cockpit features stackable digital displays that can be customized depending on whether the driver is rock crawling, running high-speed trails, or cruising on the highway.

Serious Off-Road Hardware & Drone Tech
Just because it is mid-sized does not mean it lacks capability. GM designed the HUMMER X with a low center of gravity and extreme on-demand acceleration. To handle the rough stuff, the concept is outfitted with Multimatic shocks, removable fender flares, and serious underbody armor.
To top it off, the Pasadena team envisioned the truck integrating directly with a scout drone. Through the HUMMER HUB app suite, the drone can fly ahead on the trail to feed real-time terrain data back to the cabin before returning to dock itself on the vehicle.
HUMMER X Specs: Truck vs. SUV
GM debuted two variations of the HUMMER X: a pickup and an SUV. The SUV features a significantly shorter wheelbase and massive 37-inch tires, giving it the edge in pure rock-crawling geometry, while the pickup rolls on 35-inch tires with a longer stance.

Sustainable and Easter Egg Heavy
The Advanced Design team built the HUMMER X around the mantra: “Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints.”
To hit their sustainability targets, they avoided traditional industrial adhesives. Instead, the concept uses mechanical fasteners and snap-fits, allowing parts to be easily swapped, shared, or recycled. The seatbacks and instrument panel ends are even made from recycled car fascias.
And it wouldn’t be a GM design study without a few hidden Easter eggs. The team’s mantra is actually imprinted in Morse code on the floor of the vehicle, and the tire treads spell out the phrase, “The courage to get lost leads to new discoveries.”
