The tools needed:

  • a ratchet (1/4 inch drive tools worked great for me)
  • 7mm socket, 5.5mm or 7/32 socket, and an extension
  • flew drive
  • a universal may also come in handy, especially when tightening the cover screw that is over the transmission hump.

To replace the in-cab air filters, first you need to remove the plastic cover under the passenger’s side of the dash.

There are three 7mm screws that hold the cover in place. I suggest not removing the screw that is over the transmission hump (screw #3) completely. If you do, it can be very difficult to reinstall it. If you just loosen it up a little, you can remove the other two, and then just swing the cover down and out of the way.

Get the plastic cover out of the way

After the cover is out of the way, you’ll see a single screw holding the small air filter cover plate in place. You’ll need a 5.5 mm socket to remove this screw, but a 7/32 socket will work also.

After the small cover plate is removed, you’ll see one of the filters in the housing. Pull the filter down and out of the housing. You may need to rotate the filter as you pull it down so it will clear the big cover panel lying in the floor.

Remove first filter

After the first filter is removed, look inside the housing, and you’ll see the second filter. Just slide it out, pull it down and out of the housing just like the first one.

When reinstalling the new filters, make sure you have the arrow (airflow) on them pointing in the right direction, towards the driver’s side of the truck. Installing the rest of the cover panels is the reverse of removing them.
