I have been dealing with your problem since June of last year. I've taken it to multiple dealerships as well. I don't know if you saw my previous comment, but I had an electrical fire last week after dealing with this for almost a year. The cause was the battery cable that connects to the alternator is causing extreme drops and spikes in voltage when under 15 mph. Every time my truck would give me warning lights (assisted steering, service stablitrak, etc) and shut off was when I was about to park or in a drive through. Eventually the alternator blew up. I took action faster than I should have and had the fire out with only fire damage to the air intake, alternator and some wiring. I should have let the whole thing burn. I'm going through GM Customer service for the 30th time and maybe they will take my experience to help others.

The dealer said the battery cable that leads to the alternator is what caused the alternator to catch fire. It's also the suspect for all the electrical problems i was having with the truck shutting off on me and locking the steering wheel. We'll see.

So Chevrolet called and verified that the alternator is what caused the fire. Not to sure on what all has been damaged yet or why it caught fire. The truck is still in the shop, when I hear more I'll update this thread.

I'm waiting for them to tell me the alternator caused the fire and it isn't covered under warranty so I'm going to have to pay for damages! Lol. I might die from laughter.

Not going to lie, after all was said and done, the thought did cross my mind. I've always believed in doing the right thing and acting accordingly when you can. I've been more than patient and helpful with my truck problems over the year and all I ever asked for was for someone to be on the same page as myself. Wasn't asking for a lot, just what needed to be done. The effort that was put in by GM to fix the problem shows the conclusion. Just saying GM.

I'm glad my family is okay! I've been nervous to drive my truck for the past year, not for my life but for my family's. This is a family vehicle and regardless nobody should feel unsafe in this New of a vehicle. And the fact that GM both dealership and over the phone customer service did not care for the past year still has me on edge that not a thing will be done. I have no trust or faith in GM anymore. I'll go back to my old Chevys instead of buying this new crap

HAD THE SAME PROBLEM FOR THE PAST YEAR!! Chevy has been giving me the run around and now today my engine caught fire!!! This has happened to me multiple times and is always random when it happens. It's also random what will happen. Sometimes it just shuts off. Or will shutoff lock up. Or will shutoff lock up and will lock the doors. Either way who knows when it's going to happen. Chevy has a huge problem on their hands and they don't seem to want to deal with it. Good luck and be careful!

This is now 2017 so who knows if my problem is the same as the engine fire recall in 2014. I own a 2014 silverado LTZ. I've had Electrical problems for the past year to where the truck would shut off while I'm driving, lock the steering wheel and doors. Start it right back up and acted like nothing ever happened. That went on for about 6+ months and about 5 times. A few months after that I started getting a low oil light that would go off and on randomly. Weird considering I still had 60% life left on my dashboard and the dipstick was reading full. At that time I started noticing a burning smell when I would turn on my heat. It was the first time I turned my heat on all winter so I just thought it was nothing. Told the dealership anyways and they said they couldn't find anything wrong and didn't notice a burning smell so the truck was safe to drive. That happened about a month and half ago. NOW I was driving back from the beach with my wife and dog while I started get crazy movement in my battery voltage on my dash to the point that the truck entered battery saver mode. Drove for 4 more miles to be exact and the voltage popped back up to normal. At that moment we pulled into Dunkin Donuts to get coffee. Pulled up the the screen and noticed the burning smell again, but this time it was stronger. I shut off the heat which was at only 75 degrees. We pulled forward to the cashier and noticed white smoke coming out of my hood on the right side. I turned the ignition off. Told my wife to get out of the vehicle and told the cashier to grab a fire extinquisher. Went to open the hood and flames were coming from the right side of the engine near the engine block and air intake. Not just smoke, but actual fire. Put it out with the fire extinquisher and called the dealership to come get it.

I have a 2014 Silverado LTZ Z71. I have loved my truck since the day I had the keys handed to me, that was until about 6 months ago. I got back from a deployment and about a month later the truck started acting weird. First I noticed my headlights dimming while driving. Driving to church one day I had my cruise control on at 55 mph, went to change lanes and my turn signal turned off my cruise control. I did it 3 times to make sure I wasn't just seeing things. About 20 minutes later my radio cut off, then my air conditioning and then my whole dash turned off, almost like the truck shut off. A second later everything came back on. At this point I was nervous to drive the truck so I went to park, right as I slowed down a SERVICE STABLITRAK popped up, all my lights started flashing, got a LOSS OF STEERING and then the truck shut off. Put it in park. Started right back up with now problem. No check engine light, no codes thrown almost like nothing happened. Took it to a GMC dealer that next Monday. They did some recalls on the truck and messed with the computer about. Dealer drove it and couldn't get the truck to act up. So I thought the recall fixed it. A month later. Driving down my road at about 35 mph truck shut off. No warning. No flashing lights nothing. Coasted down the road and then put it in park. Turned the truck back over and it gave me a SERVICE STABLITRACK and a LOSS OF STEERING. This time I took it a Chevrolet Dealership. They also could not find anything wrong. A few days later. Driving through Starbucks I got a SERVICE STABLITRAK. Instead of pulling out on the highway I pulled into a parking space to be safe. Before I could pull all the way in I got a LOSS OF STEERING light and the steering wheel locked up. Everything flashed, the doors locked and then the truck shut off. Truck wouldn't unlock or do anything when the ignition was turned for about 3-5 minutes. At this point I was blocking traffic and was locked in my truck. Unsafe and embarrassed with my family in the truck. This time it gave me a CHECK ENGINE light at least. Took it back into Chevrolet that next Monday. They followed the check engine light codes and messed around with the engine wire harness. They called me the following day saying the truck was ready to be picked up and hopefully this will never happen again. A few months later. Got a SERVICE STABLITRAK as I was about to pull onto the highway. I stopped, pulled my phone out and pulled into the nearest parking lot. I caught everything on video. The head lights dimming. The steering wheel locking up. The doors locking by themselves and then finally the truck shutting off. Along with starting the truck back up and it acting like nothing happened. I took it back into Chevrolet that next day. Told them what happened and gave them the video in hopes that it will help them fix the truck. Given that every little bit of info could help at this point. They called me 2 days later saying they checked everything that they were supposed to and couldn't find anything wrong. Told me it was ready for pick up. Unfortunately this time I was done. I told them I was not picking the truck up until they could tell me for certain that they truck wouldn't shut off again. I contacted GM customer service and stated my problems and my dissatisfaction. They told me they know that I am worried for my safety and are sorry for my frustration but there is nothing they can do. I am disgusted with Chevrolet. I have always owned Chevy to the point I pretty much preached their good name. After this combination of quality in the truck and quality in customer service, I will never own another Chevrolet after this.
