I know this thread is old but I had to revive it to correct some blatantly bad information shared by several folks replying to the OP here regarding the 4 speed transmission in his 89 K3500. The fact is not only could that 4 speed be factory in an 89’ HD 2500 or 3500….it was the ONLY manual option for the HD pickups…..the NV4500 didn’t come out until 1992, before that all 8 lug trucks with manual transmissions got the SM-465 4 speed. It’s not an opinion….its a fact, that’s what GM offered. The only 5 speed manual available from 88-91 were the light duty aluminum units found in the 1500’s and LD 6 lug 2500’s, they were the predecessor to the NV3500 but there are differences, I know the HM-290 was the earliest model but I believe there may have been another revision after that before they started offering the “real” NV3500 in 92’. Once again this is all for 5 and 6 lug trucks only though and doesn’t apply to trucks like the OP’s.
