I have a FCC license for radio repair and operation.
I work on Blackhawks and Chinooks for the Army.
I will tell you that FM radio reception is line of sight. I have not yet looked into the location of the reception antenna on my new Silverado and this is my first SIlverado.
Based on what I am reading, the reception has diminished with this model year. The problem is possibly related to the "detuning" that was mentioned above but not likely that GM would actually sabotage their own equipment. It is more likely related to poor location of the antenna, a batch of bad antennas, bad bonding of the antenna to the frame or possibly interference of reception bleeding over into other truck internal gadgets and features. If I decide to pinpoint and troubleshoot this issue, I would first look at how the antenna is bonded to the truck and then how the other electronics interface with the radio.
