Over the air infotainment update
3.0 replied to moobaru's topic in Troubleshooting, Warranty & Recalls
That would be great but it never completes the install where I live so it just becomes a viscous circle. Therefor the only resolve is a hard download at the dealership 100 miles away. -
Got a 2020 3.0 D for the most part love the truck but not a lot of confidence in the engineers who take the bus and/or train to work. This is a heads up for the coming winter on your block heater. The engineers have put a thermostatic head in the male head of their GM specific block heater cord ( the cord is a rip off / 100 bucks if you have to replace it) so if you need to use another extension cord to plug in do not leave the plug head of the gm cord laying on the ground. If the air temp is warmer than -18c the ground may be colder opening the block heater circuit which the motor will see as a heat issue/fault code when you start the motor it will turn on the high fan for 6 hours of run time. The only way to resolve the issue is let the engine run in fan high for 6 hrs or remove the fault code. Gm doesn't think this is a serious issue and has shown no interest in resolving either the cord or heat sync issue so even though it's a pain if you come across this issue call roadside assistance and have them tow the vehicle to the nearest stealer and if it hits their pocket book often enough they will resolve the issue (put the thermostat in the standard male receptacle in the bumper) . Thought for the day ... think of how much more money GM would make if they did it right the first time?

Wondering if anybody knows what to do if your out of cell phone range and you happen to lose your fob. In the good old days use to just carry a spare key in the wallet now what do you do when your 100 miles from civilization it's 40 below outside and you drop your fob in 4 feet of snow. Customer service and the stealer have no response so far in this example of engineers spending HOUR troubleshooting possible scenarios with their fool proof systems. Anybody have a solution?

Over the air infotainment update

I live in an area where it will not download properly and I have to take it to the stealer for a proper install. The problem is until I get to the dealer the radio will not work properly even when I push the download later option. They also cannot turn this download feature off just another example of GM engineers spending HOUR of time to work the bugs out of a system they say can't fail LOL -
Not an electrician it was parts that told me the male head has a thermostat in it and is why the cord is specific.I do know I had a real issue with plugging in when the temp was bouncing back a forth above and below -18 earlier in Dec and Jan..I would think the best way to check it would be to test it warm and then test it cold and see how it reacts. Your cord head looks smaller than my 20 but could be for any reason.Try plugging it in with another extension cord and keep the male end on ice and see what happens if it was like mine you'll either have to let it sit for 6 hrs. or clear the code.

Let's take our hats off to those really intelligent GM engieers (on purpose) never met an engineer that could spell. The bumper connection is specific and the extension cord is specific (the male end contains a thermostat that is set at -18c). So now if someone borrows your cord you are done until you can find a new cord from your stealer or where ever.... 1day or 1 week or maybe 2 or 3 depending on the post office . Next if you use an extension cord with the original cord make sure the male end doesn't lay on the ground because now the thermostat may think its colder than it is and start setting off another bunch of special issues (you'll find out). The solution is too easy, just build the thermostat into the block heater cord going to the bumper mount keeping it off the ground and away from vandalism, and then have a standard male electrical cord end on the bumper mount DUUUH Homer. So if someone borrows your cord and your wheels won't start make sure and call GM roadside assistance and don't stop calling them until they get you a new cord and they have to keep coming to start you because there are no cords available.Support Your Local Tow Truck CO. :) He may even have a spare cord LOL

Would like to find another block heater cord the works with the bumper plug in or a short converter just so I have a back up.Does anyone know of a supplier?

3.0 Duramax Egine Fan Stuck on High
3.0 replied to 3.0's topic in Troubleshooting, Warranty & Recalls
It sets a code when it happens don't clear it ,they found a sensor and thermostat issue on mine finally -
I used a bilstein 2.5 strut in the front and a 0-4 inch rough country and 2" block in the back and got a sold 2.25 inches all around. It is a noticeable difference in ride quality especially on the bigger bumps. I was looking at the southern cal coil over setups which are nice but they are not made for northern climate and just won't hold up to road salt & mud. Not only that but they require regular service which in Canada costs more than the 1 time cost on the bilsteins. To all those going higher than 2 -21/2" good luck as every mechanic I have talked to says the long term costs will get you ie ball joints & cv angles and drive shaft angles (unless you start putting in drop brackets). All in I was just over a grand Canadian and say it was a great buy. The other thing to watch for on a taller lift is the fuel lines on the 3.0 duramax as it's not good for them. Just my .02$

On the 3.0 the block heater works all the time the dealership recommends the truck not be plugged in until temps reach-18c.I did this with mine and the temps warmed up to -12 overnight and when I started the truck the engine fan kicked into high and would not turn off ( apparently has to sit for six hours to stop this problem temporarily) finally convinced dealer of issue and their replacing a sensor and a thermostat. There was a bulletin on the issue but when I posted on the issue I got no feedback so I assume it wasn't a common problem.
-
Had the same issue with what I'm assuming was a bad download, radio stayed on and door locks were acting weird so I did a battery disconnection and the problem went away for a few days and returned ,as quickly as it returned it disappeared and have had no issues since. Have been told by those in the know that gm's issues with the head unit go back to 17 on some models and they have been waiting over 2 years for a resolution to the problems. I'm going to the dealer to get a hard connect update done, I have no confidence in GM's over the air update system.

I've got the Baby D and when I plug in most times the engine fan cuts in on High and will not shut down the only fix so far is to clear the code or to let the truck sit for 6 hours.Just had it stuck on high yesterday and drove around to see what would happen. The fan would not shut down and the temp gauge was sitting at 1/2 it's normal position. This was at 0 c or 32 f (wonder what would happen at -25c) . Has anybody had this issue and has it been resolved, what was the fix?My service dept and apparently GM say there is no known issue and yes I've seen the GM techlink from dec 2019
-
From what I've been told it's a connection and of course this is a completely different fuel system from any they previously have used.
-
So the problem has been found but the resolution may be a long ways away. The issue is a faulty fuel line which caused loss of prime in the fuel filter causing the system shutdown the solution is to replace the faulty parts the realty is the part is on back order for the foreseeable future. It now becomes a waiting game.

I too have owned and driven many diesel trucks ( even dumb enough to through money at performance 6.6 with 700+hp) since the 90's and only once did I have gelled fuel (Alberta -35 ) and the truck still ran for 12 hrs only in limp mode. The dealer that I purchase from since 05 tells me he changes to winter fuel in Oct. and my last tank full before the incident was December so I really hesitant to blame the fuel with all the sensors and a heated fuel line but anything is possible.
-
The service department says it was a fuel issue not really buying it though as this truck has a screen in the tank,a water in fuel sensor,a fuel heater and a water separating fuel filter to get past and warn you theres an issue and it still shut down completely..

Which AT Tires & how are they holding up
3.0 replied to 3.0's topic in Engines & Drivetrain (V8, Duramax, TurboMax)
The others are all good tires depending on size as the weight maybe a factor in fuel mileage. The ones I like best so far are the nitto grappler 275 60 r20 with 34 inch circumference and a 47lb weight and 100,000 km warranty with the snowflake don't think you can go wrong unless the goodyears are 1/2 the price. -
So driving down the highway pull out to pass snow plow and half way past the motor goes to reduce power but get just past snow plow and then it completely shuts down with the snow plow on my butt and just have enough roll to get on the shoulder. After 2 days in the shop they say It's bad fuel which I question because I've been buying from the same pump since 05.Also said the fuel filter was only partially filled which I see as either fuel pump failure or there's a problem at the pickup. So have to see what happens however the other thing Ive learned is the starter once engaged will not stop for 30 -45 seconds regardless of whether the engine starts and there is no way to stop it, another gm engineering program at it's best,,really hard on the battery as well. Also if you have to get towed apparently the new gm trucks have no frame holes to put the hooks into ,it will also tear off the valance when they winch it onto the deck but Ill let roadside assistance ( I don't know how they have the nerve to call it that ) worry about that since they hired the tow company. s
-
So driving down the highway and go to pass a snow plow (-25c) and the 3.0 duramax dies right on the spot about 10 seconds of notice.I was really lucky to get it pulled over. I was able to check the codes and the list was longer than the lights on a Christmas tree just about every sensor had something bad to say.Luckily I was only a 10 mile tow from a dealership as I got a stretch that leaves me over 250 kilometers fro a dealership in any direction. This shut down put me in severe danger and some really ignorant drivers didn't help ( why people die). Anyone have this issue yet as I'm still waiting on answers.

Just remember as soon as you go to a 10 ply AT you can expect to lose about 5 mpg so heads up. There are a few tires that will get you around 33 inches and keep weight in the 40-45 lb range after that the rubber comes in at the high 50's and some close to 70,and you can watch the fuel mileage drop with the weight of the tire. Just my $ .02

Which AT Tires & how are they holding up
3.0 replied to 3.0's topic in Engines & Drivetrain (V8, Duramax, TurboMax)
So after a month of research and the internal fight of to go big or not I've come to the conclusion to go with the nitto 275 60 20 33" circumference it comes with 100k warranty, tips the scales at a measly 41 lbs. and has a mid aggressive all weather snowflake tread pattern.Main reason is, it give the truck a more aggressive look without affecting fuel mileage which is the primary reason for going to a diesel in the first place unlike the affects of putting on a 10 ply 34-35 " tire that comes in at 60 to 70 lbs per tire. From what I've seen so far this could mean 5mpg or more and over the life of the truck that's a lot of extra fuel....problem solved (for me) -

Just curious I see Rancho has a 3" kit seeing your extensive knowledge on shocks how would you rate the Rancho 9000 xl against the bilstein 5100. -

Some have said nitto's others the toyo at3 which are brothers, seeing most every brand is putting out a decent tire seems the tire rating based on weight of truck is more important....don't want an f rated tire on a half ton.
