Hello everyone
I am new to the forum and really pleased to join this wonderful community of Chevy and GMC truck enthusiasts! I recently purchased a 2018 chevy Silverado 1500 with a 5.3L V8; and I've been enjoying it so far. I would like to begin customising it for more off roading and trail driving; as I intend to take it on more rough travels later this year.
I have done some basic off roading before, but this is my first time building a truck for it; so I am seeking suggestions on the best additions for performance and protection. I have been reading up on a few things; but I would love to hear advice from others with more experience; particularly anyone who has constructed a similar model Silverado.
I intend to install a 3 to 4 inch lift for increased clearance; but I am not sure which brand to go with. BDS and rough country have both received positive reviews. Are there any other brands I should consider? Is there anything else I should know about lifting that could affect my driving comfort or handling?
I intend to tackle some harder trails, and I want to protect the under body. I know the Z71 comes with factory skid plates; but I am not sure if they are adequate or if I should update them. Any recommendations for aftermarket skid plates? I am also considering adding rock sliders for side protection; are they worth it, or do they add unneeded weight?
I am thinking about getting a cold air intake and possibly an exhaust upgrade to boost airflow and overall power. Have any of you tried this with your Silverados? If so, did you notice a substantial improvement in performance; or are these mods just about sound and appearance?
I already have the basics in recovery gear; such as a tow strap and a winch; but are there any more must have tools or equipment for off roading that I may not be considering?
My goal is to design a truck that can handle intermediate off road terrain without compromising too much daily drivability; as I still use it as my main vehicle. I would appreciate any feedback; particularly from anyone who have constructed a comparable system or have experience with these changes.
Thank you in advance for your assistance; and I look forward to learning from everyone here.
