I would not have them on without the lift, I like the way the truck looks without them better. The pros are they help protect the rocker panels of the truck and they save the driver seat from me sliding in and out of the truck without them.
I had the same thoughts when I was looking for boards, the oem boards hang too low and are thicker than my liking. I am glad I spent the extra money for the chrome on the side, they match the body side molding and door handles great. These are a breeze to install and you can adjust them in and out from the rocker panel. If you wanted to drill new holes on the bracket you could adjust the height, but If you made them higher it would be harder to use getting in and out of the truck.
