2024 LTZ mileage vs previous 2017
rrmccabe replied to rrmccabe's topic in Troubleshooting, Warranty & Recalls
Dropping the setting to average over 25 miles definitely helped me see changes quicker and see improvements when I attempted to drive in a manner to get decent MPG. I am not terribly behind the 2017 at this point and hope the 2024 continues to improve. I would like to like to get that auto start disable as I never remember to shut it off. I think in my situation that is hurting mileage and not helping because the truck is never off more than 5 seconds. -
One thing worth checking into for future reference. I don't know about you guys with fancy GMC's but for us Chevy guys the manual in the glovebox is only a partial manual. I have a downloaded PDF of the manual that I reference if needed. The infotainment screen also has a manual and I can only assume its complete but dont know for sure.

GM customer service— am I wrong?
rrmccabe replied to Djmech26's topic in 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
Something else I saw posted on here once that makes sense. You get your disc overheated for whatever reason. Lets say aggressive driving or coming down a big grade. You come to a stop and keep your foot on the brake pedal at a long stoplight of side of road, effectively creating a heat sink in the area of the pad and that area cools at a different rate than rest of rotor which can warp rotors. Cant prove that to be true but have tried to Move the truck a little after a complete stop in situations like that. When I first started driving we would take rotors and drums to a shop and have them turned when doing a brake job. Now days they are so cheap they don't even want cores back. Can't imagine that materials these days are great anyway. -
Did any of you move from a K2 to a T1?

In my case I just bought as much data as I could with my GM rewards. Whatever I did was $25 a month but I think I have seen people post that they are on some $15 a month plan. That would be easier to swallow. -

Had not heard that. I think that's great, but they should just drop it for everyone. Why have a bastard year of trucks where you have to pay. Appreciate the info. -

I agree with Bob. Covering brake parts at 20,000 miles would not be common. Warped brake rotors happen often and not necessarily faulty parts. Driving techniques can warp rotors too. To be honest the last 10 pairs of rotors I have replaced were not wore out, they were warped and I replaced them because they were annoying. -

Everything newdude said is spot on. I will just reiterate a summary of my experience. I came from a 2017 5.3L High Country to a 2024 LTZ. I personally prefer the looks of the previous generation truck but bought a new one anyway. I honestly don't care for the bowtie being moved up on the refresh truck. My biggest likes although taking a while to get used to is the interior of the 2024 with the technology package. As mentioned the infotainment center has glitches but have finally found some settings in Android auto that seem to help that. The electronic shifter is odd and not sure it makes sense but I like it. I think its a matter of getting it to be a memory automatic thing. Strange pushing forward to backup. The truck feels big driving it. I felt I had better visibility when backing out of the garage seeing the sides on the 2017. It felt more nimble to maneuver around. The 2024 is tall and the box sides and tailgate are higher than I would like. Getting in the back of truck is a challenge. If I could economically drop the truck 4" I would. I am going to drop the rear 1 1/2" using replacement shackles. Hoping that is enough. Currently my mpg is less with the 5.3 10 speed than it was with he 5.3 8 speed. Hoping it will get better as I break it in. Its quiet and rides well. I was expecting to lose ride when I went from my 2017 with 20" Michelins to the 2024 with 22's with cheaper tires. But feels similar. I find the dash and turn signal stock less visible on the 2024 with where the tilt feels comfortable but having a heads up display makes up for it as I rarely look at the actual dash. The 2024 is certainly more car like than the 2017 High Country inside. Also mentioned above its annoying and expensive you are going to have to pay for a data plan to make everything work. I love having the posted speed limit sign below my speed limit on the HUD but that stops working in a month unless you subscribe to a minimal onstar plan. No 12v accessory plug on the new ones so that's an issue for those of us that have "cigarette lighter" plug accessories. -
Just ran some errands and on the way there the Posted Speed Limit sign function did not work. The radio cut in and out on my internet source so was thinking maybe its AT&T coverage problem. On way back Posted speed limit did not work, radio stopped playing completely and eventually radio rebooted on its own. Posted Speed Limit sign did not work after that.

I assume the posted speed limit sign on your dash and HUD no longer works. I have been told that this function and other Google features in the infotainment no longer work without data. I have figured out that the maps on the GM home screen and the maps on the Android auto screen are independent and one lacks in features like satellite view.

Stainless/Chrome running boards
rrmccabe replied to rrmccabe's topic in Modifications, Wheels & Tires
I will watch the store for deals but if I remember correctly those running boards were about $850 and even with 10% off its still more than I want to spend. In the end I probably will anyway. My sales guy did set me up but the rewards did not amount to much. I rolled those into GM data which only covered about 6 months. -
There is no doubt the Google system is better than old GM NAV. My first experience with that was my Trailblazer SS and it was horrible. On top of that GM wanted to charge you for DVD updates which where still way behind. Same thing in my 17 high country. NAV was not worth using so I tethered the phone with Android Auto. I am not overly happy you need a Data plan in all the new trucks to have functionality for the Google features I had for free in the 17. My salesman failed to mention that when he was talking about Google. That said, I am at my limit for things I am going to pay for monthly including Sirius XM. When my trial runs out in a week and a half, I am done. The google stuff should be free. We are paying for a phone with all the data as it is. GM just wants more money on top of the $70k I dropped on the truck. I have not found an option that controls your default source for media. When I "Hey Google, play....." its always YouTube music which is also a pay thing but my YouTube premium fortunately includes that. I also have a pretty sizable playlist on USB but have not figured out how to voice command that yet. When the infotainment works, it works great. For the most part, I have been happy with it. But in the 2 1/2 weeks I have had it, I have had things stop working 3 times where Onstar had me reset things which lost some of my settings.

Stainless/Chrome running boards
rrmccabe replied to rrmccabe's topic in Modifications, Wheels & Tires
Those are probably at top of my list. On thing I like about GM is I can buy parts. I replaced some of the plastic pieces on my 2017 with readily available parts. Only downside is price. Just trying to find better deal. Like OEM takeoffs at dealer. -
2024 LTZ mileage vs previous 2017

Thanks, guess I missed that the distance averages could be set. Changing it to 25 will certainly help me see the mileage improve as I drive it 'nicely'. Rich -
2024 LTZ mileage vs previous 2017
rrmccabe replied to rrmccabe's topic in Troubleshooting, Warranty & Recalls
Thanks for the reply. Yea 5.4 was a typo I need to check manual to see if there is any info on the mpg screen to see if it averages over a longer distance. The last truck I could work at it and see quicker improvement. I think it averaged over the last 25 miles. My admitted excess idle time would make it harder to bring that mpg up if the sample distance was longer. I just was not expecting any change in engine from 2017 to 2024 and would like to get back to that 19.x range. I think I am past the excess idle time now so maybe I will just reset it and see how it does. And yes, I am way under the 3000 to 5000 mile number you referenced. Actually about 500 miles. But just finished my second tank of fuel and topped off yesterday. -
I traded in my 2017 High Country (4wd) for a 2024 LTZ. Both are 5.3 liter and very similar trucks although the 2017 had a slightly longer bed. I have read that the trucks are still AFM or DFM even though the instrument cluster does now show it. I could not find anything in manual and my Window Sticker does not indicate that either. I do a lot of driving on my area which is not exactly city but not hwy either. Mostly 25 to 45 mph speeds. The High Country would easily stay in the 19.x mpg range and I even got 27.x out of it once on the highway although 24mpg was more common. The new truck under the same conditions is doing about 15.x mpg. Trying to take it easy, watch the mpg meter and it just is really not busting into the 16s yet let alone 19s. I would assume break in might help, but I would have guessed going from a 17 5.3L to a 24 5.3L would have not cost me any mileage. Not to mention the 2024 is a little smaller truck. Anyone have similar experience? Picture below was on the way to the dealer to be traded in and represents typical. In all fairness it has got some excessive idle time figuring stuff out and maybe it averages over a greater distance and I need to be more patient

I leave my wipers off too. My comment is more about the poor documentation. As far as steering wheel tilt, I am going to make that adjustment based on comfort. Gauges are secondary. As I said the HUD helps. And no matter where I place wheel the turn signal stalk info on end is behind the leather wheel. I am sure once I am used to the truck I won't need to look.
-
Just want to add GM did a horrible job documenting this feature in the manual. I cant say how well they work on my 2024 LTZ yet as I am struggling to figure it out. Seems there should be a AUTO section on the turn signal stalk with slow fast and intermittent. Not that you could see it because for me they have hidden it behind the steering wheel so you struggle to see it. Much like the top of gauges which makes me thankful for buying a truck with the HUD.

2024 silverado 1500 USB music issue
rrmccabe replied to 99silveradoz71's topic in 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
This is the most annoying thing ever. Defeats the purpose and drives you towards using online sources and of course GM onstar plans. -
As I was videoing this weirdness to post here I think I realized one thing. There are two different YouTube music applications on these trucks. The one that shows up on the Chevrolet home screen which is independent of the one loaded under Android auto. So If I say Hey Google play REO Speedwagon it is using the YT app on the main GM Home Screen. The YouTube app that shows up on 1/3 off my screen with map is the Android Auto version. Have not had time to figure out the start screen yet as I am back to figuring out why the posted speed limit sign function has stopped working again.
