  1. Kind of off topic but a friend of mine in an over the road truck driver in northern Ontario. I think it was 3 years ago when he got a new Peterbilt which was the 1st truck he'd driven that req'd DEF. Well on a trip around the north side of Lake Superior the DEF system craps out & derates. I think rather than wait on the side of the highway in colder weather than what the OP was seeing, he limped about 50 miles into Thunder Bay Ontario. That wasn't the only issue he had w/ the truck that winter which was colder than the average he'd been seeing. He was pretty ticked off about it considering his previous truck, a Navistar didn't cause him any troubles during the winter months. He figured Peterbilt did their cold weather testing in Denton TX. I was a bit puzzled. He said that was their HQ.
  2. Well I think I've got it figured out. Today when I was out & about I found that the "setting" was much too low (about a quarter inch from the "-" side of the bar on the Maximum Startup Volume screen. I could barely hear the audio when I started the truck. Tonight I did the following: - set MSV to 1/3 of the bar - return to "Radio" screen & cranked up the volume (2/3s of volume bar) - turned truck off - open & closed door - locked door - waited 30 seconds - unlocked door - open & closed door - started truck Audio volume was @ a normal level when radio came on Something I found a couple of times after adjusting is that if you adjust the MSV level, but don't return to the Radio screen, the volume will be unchanged from the previous usage when you restart the truck.
  3. I've played w/ it a couple of times on my truck to no avail. My brother actually found the "page" in the menu where it was located. I'll try locking the door & waiting long before the restart. Currently I've set it (quite low) then had the radio playing @ about 50%. Turn the truck off, remove the key then open & close the door. Restart the truck & volume is @ 50%.
  4. When you do the R & R, compare the feel between the boxes. I'm wondering if there is premature wear (causing slop) between the cross shaft & power piston nut? http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachments/testing/941042d1372393582-ill-just-put-here-86-88-toyota-ifs-box-exploded-diagram.jpg This may explain why the early fix included readjusting the "lash". I doubt many of us have ever had this adjusted in the past. Other components may wear out in the front end, but when they're replaced the steering is as good as new.
  5. I wonder if we'll ever find out what the actual "failure" is? XU, had the dealership performed any of the other TSBs or did they go directly to the box replacement? Seems sort of pointless for owners (down the road) to go thru the "alphabet" when they may have been superceded by later TSBs.
  6. To those that have towed w/ multiple trucks, does the trailer socket on the K2XX seem problematic or are you having the same number of alerts as earlier trucks? I haven't towed w/ my new truck yet, but never had any trailer wiring related messages when towing w/ my '04 or '11 trucks.
  7. Good luck we had crappy weather after I picked mine up & then winter arrived. Other than going to the next town (half an hour away) & washing it, I won't have any decent pics until next spring :-(
  8. Just read recently in an article about the "advanced safety systems" (sarcasm off) that have recently been introduced. From the Toronto Star: Has anyone heard of the brake switch failing (well maybe yes seeing as everything is made so cheaply anymore)? In 40 years of driving I think I've replaced 1 GM "multifunction switch" & a floor mounted dimmer switch on my '82 GMC. The high mounted brake light on my Monte is pooched since the bulb on it burned out & fused itself to the socket. I would hope that THERE IS an override switch other wise a driver could be stuck anywhere w/ a "dead" vehicle.
  9. I had a problem in '15 w/ my previous truck while on an RV trip (fortunately only 2 hours from home). Drive to provincial park was OK but while driving to visit a relative, I get a Service Stabiltrac, 4WD and traction control message, plus truck was really sluggish (limp mode I guess). Made it home & took it to dealer. They "reprogrammed" the TCCM to override some out of spec reading. Why does everything have to be "tied together" so if 1 system fails, all the others do? Wouldn't it make sense to have the various systems independent of each other but get inputs from the others? As bad as Christmas lights wired so when 1 goes out, they all do. SMH! I'm probably not looking @ the big picture as we were always told if we questioned something.
  10. I surfed around to a couple of other model years, interesting stuff. Some of the '82 info looked familiar as my father had brought home some similar info before I ordered my '82. The info confirmed what I thought about the tire codes X - front Y - rear Z - spare These prefixes were followed by a 2 letter tire code.
  11. How much damage to her car? I got rear ended years ago when a clown tried to beat a yellow light & I was stopped beyond that behind a line of cars. Tweaked my rear bumper but major damage to his Monte Carlo. The rad support was laid back about 45* & the hood was buckled up like an "A".
  12. I guess I should've specified when the option added the Z71 flares to the 3/4 ton. Did these trucks use a wider axle?
  13. Not a pleasant method to fix this screw up, but I wonder if the electronics can be bypassed & a "conventional" box installed?
  14. What years was the C6P (HD 3/4 ton) option offered? My brother had a "light" 3/4 ton that was a '95.
  15. I know they wouldn't be making a separate part for Canada, but we get our notices from GM of Canada's Service Dep't, in Oshawa, not GM Corp in Detroit. And yes he is taking steps to getting it fixed.
  16. Things vary across the border between the US & Canada. I've gone into the local dealership w/ a PN for a GMPD/AC Delco "chemical" as seen in the US. They look up the PN & draw a blank. Turns out due the packaging differences (us using metric) the PNs reflect this up here. Lots of instances in the owner's manual over the years where 2 PNs are listed for the same fluid.
  17. You can add another 1 to the list. My brother was asking me about the steering in my truck. I asked him if it was sloppy & he said yes. The S-I-L has been driving it mostly & said she really had to be mindful of the steering. I said to them did they have to "chase" the steering & he said yes. Are the TSBs use the same designation on both sides of the border? Just don't want him to start talking about a # that doesn't exist over here. I told him about the thread & the issue. His is a 2500 CC w/ the Dmax. Built in Flint. Checking the build out & start up chart & Flint is the sole source for 2500 & 3500 CCs. The double cabs come out of Ft. Wayne. I think all the folks that responded to the plant code have said Flint, but I doubt the assembly plant has any effect on this issue.
  18. When you say service manager do you mean "service writer"? Some of the "writers" I've dealt w/ over the years would struggle when asked how many tires on a Chevette.
  19. And what was this Digital Steering Assist supposed to accomplish?
  20. Guys did either of the service dep'ts say what the actual "defect" is? Some of the early posts mentioned retorquing the nut that holds the pitman arm to the sector shaft. Then sector shaft replacement & adjustment. Pitman arm slipping on the sector shaft perhaps?
  21. KMK, VERY nice pics. Look like they're from the '78 brochure. Does the VIN start w/ a 1 or a 2?
  22. 4 from Flint & none yet from Ft. Wayne hmmmmm
  23. How hard is it to make steering boxes & pittman arms for crying out loud? Redesigning it? WTF? Sounds like sloppy manufacturing of the parts and/or assembly @ the plant(s). It seems most of the owners reporting issues have '16s, was there a change year to year from the '15s? Reminds me of an issue we had w/ the rear W car axle assembly process. No issues putting the parts together using St. Catharines Ont' sourced castings. The problem arose when the automated equipment couldn't deal w/ the out of spec/rough/poorly cast Saginaw sourced castings. GM's solution, close the St. Catharines foundry.
  24. Can those of you that have had the steering issue arise post the ass'y plant code from the VIN? It's the 7th character from the right, F = Flint Z = Ft. Wayne
  25. Nice pic w/ the fall colours. It would be nice to get a shot like that here, but no car wash & we're on a well, so I hesitate to wash the truck @ the house.
