Shake or Vibration Issues
Schmidt152 replied to Silver space ship's topic in Troubleshooting & Recalls
RT, Very appreciative of the info you've put on here. I sent both those videos to them last week. Maybe the GM engineer will look at them as well. Sometimes I think "It has to be the tires" and other days I can't make heads or tails of anything. I wish I had a lift so I could at least measure this stuff myself. I have an accurate dial indicator. -

Update on my end. Dealership wanted to change brand of tires but GM wants an engineer to look at more PICO data. Dealership had my truck for the day while they collected more data. Apparently they didn't measure everything the first time. On another not I had a 2017 loaner double cab LT z71. The tires were Goodyear wrangler H/T's. Haven't seen this as a stock option till now? Maybe GM is going to ditch the SR-A garbage? Anyways, I hope they detect something because this 2017 rode way better. I mean night and day. No vibration in the steering wheel and I drove it for about 3 hours total had 900 miles on it when I picked it up. Asked if I could keep this one and they could keep mine Lol. The saga continues.... I would love to check mine. I even have a dial indicator that I could use, but I don't have any way of lifting my truck except for the jack that comes with it. I'm not about to crawl under my truck without jack stands or cribbing. My problem is that when I brought it to a driveshaft shop, they didn't want to touch it. I have no other shops without driving over 2 hours away. Dealership stated that they checked my driveshaft and said it was better than GM's spec but is hard to believe anything they say. I think no one is saying much right now because most people are probably in a holding patterning waiting for the dealerships to call them back. I'm currently waiting for new tires, AGAIN. This time is suppose to be different, they are putting on Michelins. I doubt its going to change anything but I still want to have some hope deep down. I will be showing them the videos of the axel flange and driveshaft and will be talking to the owner of the dealership to have them check it. I would like to be there when they are taking their measurements but idk if that will be possible. -

Made an interesting observation today that makes me think back to the posts where people said their tires are spinning on the trim causing it to not be balanced anymore. So throughout this journey I have noticed that the vibration gets worse for a while, then better then worse again and so on and so on. Well I'm driving home and cruising at 45mph and the truck was actually driving fairly smooth. Last week it was horrendous at this speed and temps have ranged from high 20s to low 40s. So as I'm driving home today, some jerk in a Mercedes tries to pull out into the median to merge with traffic. Instead of staying in the median his car is halfway into my lane and he is stopped. I hit the brakes hard and was able to go around him, avoiding collision. No ABS was not activated, just a pretty hard hit on the brakes to slow down to 15 mph. Immediately after getting back to 40-45 mph the vibration was 10 times worse. I just got a phone call from the dealer a few days ago that are now going to put michilens on my truck. Maybe it is the tires after all? God I hope so. I may take a paint pen and mark my tires and wheels as mentioned way earlier in this thread. -

My drive shafts have been checked and the runout is at or below GM spec. Spoke with the dealership and again will be having a GM engineer probably look at it soon. When I did visit a driveshaft shop he did mention that sometimes brake can hang up and cause vibration similar to tires being out of balance. Has anyone heard of anything like this? I've read the thread in almost its entirety and I don't recall this coming up. I have noticed that my vibrations can be worse when driving around all day but if the truck sits for a day or so the vibrations aren't as bad initially until the truck warms up (made this observation recently after starting to really track when I'm having problems). As mentioned time and time again my vibrations are worse between 40-55 mph and 75+, but the truck is almost never completely smooth. Only speed that I would say it is 100% normal is at 60-65 -

Hope your new ride is a keeper! Took mine on a 4 hour trip today and noticed that the 40-50 mph vibration is getting much worse. It's a very hard vibration in the steering wheel and gas pedal. Vibration is still also present above 75 mph -

I purchased a halfway decent dial indicator with a magnetic base. I should be to at least get an idea if the run out is out of spec, right? -

I believe I have a 3.08 but I'm not 100% certain. I'll have to check on that. My truck is a 2016 double cab LT with a 5.3L. I believe I do have the towing package because I have the trailer brake above the headlight knob. -

Drove an hour away to a driveline specialist today and it turned out to be pretty much a wasted trip. They were shocked that I was bringing them a brand new vehicle. Literally the first words out of the mechanics mouth was "and what year is this truck!?" So I explain the issue and noted that there are others out there like this to which they reply "never heard of this problem". So we take it for a test drive... I'm in the passenger seat and I can feel the vibration. Granted I'm very in tune to it now. So we drive for about 15 minutes and he doesn't feel vibration. Stated that it feels like every truck he drives. I will admit that the vibration has improved since the new tires and wheel but I know for a fact that it's still there. The roads in that area weren't the greatest either so he was able to get a feel of how it drives on a flat surface. So we make it back to the shop and I start asking if the drive shaft could be checked to make sure it's running true. He tells me that he didn't really feel any vibration but the little bit he did, it was "100% not the drive shaft". He began to tell me of how he's been doing this for a long time and the vibration he felt did not match what he thinks would be the same frequency as driveshaft issues... He telling me that it must be the tires. So another truck pulls into the lot, it's an 03 Silverado. The mechanic knows him and states that this guy also has a 2015 with a 6.2 L. The mechanic asks the guy if he has had any problems with his Silverado in the most vague way possible. He states "**** yeah I do. It vibrates from 40-55 in the steerwheel"! literally sounds like I gave the guy my truck. So the mechanic asks "have you had anyone try and fix it? What are you going to do about it" and He says "I'm going to get rid of the damn thing" (Probably why he's driving the 03)... The guy with the 2015 also stated that he knows of someone who also has some problems but when they leveled it, it was significantly reduced. Whenever I have something heavy in the bed of the truck it definitely is a lot better. So the mechanic is still convinced that it's not the drive shaft and that I shouldn't waste my money when it's under warranty which I appreciate the honesty but I still wanted to have the drive shaft measured. Also nothing against this place, the mechanic seemed like a good guy with some knowledge but idk how a quick drive down a bumpy road can give a definitive answer. I left empty handed and went online to buy a dial indicator so I can measure it myself and maybe I'll have the dealer install the 1.5 level. If it do it that way then they said it will be still under warranty. Also I'm about 2 seconds from giving up and driving it how it is. Maybe I'll try different tires when these wear out. I'm really on the edge of defeat.... -

Has anyone else checked the runout of their drive shafts other than 07Softail? Made an appointment for Thursday at a local driveline shop. I originally had some vibration from 20-50 (worst from 40-55) and even worse shaking from 70+. After having the wheels and tires replaced and balanced 4 times I only have the shaking from 20-50. Its in the steering wheel and pedals. Probably present throughout the truck but this is where I notice it now. I will update Thursday or Friday on what I find. -

Back from the dealer for the 4th time. Replaced all wheels and tires from another Silverado on the lot. Same Wrangler SR-A's and 18 inch wheels. Vibration from 65-80 is gone. Seems to be pretty smooth, if I do feel anything at over 70 it may just be irregularities in the road. Now for the bad news. Instead of vibration that I can feel in the steering wheel, seats and center console it is now isolated to the steering wheel only. It feels as if I have extremely aggressive tires or I'm driving on a gravel road. I'm really tired of going to the dealership which is 40 minutes away only to have the same answers of wheels and tires. I'm thinking of taking it to a driveshaft specialist and check to see if the driveshafts are running true. Also while going down the road I have put it in neutral and nothing changes. Does not appear to be affected by AFM or V8 mode... -

Shake or Vibration Issues
Schmidt152 replied to Silver space ship's topic in Troubleshooting & Recalls
After driving over 2 hours at highway speeds in the last day I concluded that my symptoms are very similar. 70-77 i have vibration in the steering wheel that after driving for 30 minutes you want to let go because it's going to make your hand numb. Going around bends there is a noticeable increase in the strength of the vibration. Really any pressure on the wheel left or right the vibration is more noticeable. Anyways after jacking up my truck this afternoon to see if my wheels "ticked" I found that neither of them did. What I did find however what a very distinct sound difference between the front driver and passenger wheels. When turning the driver front wheel by hand I heard a very consistant sounds of what I can only assume is the bearings rolling. (Keep in mind I don't have experience working on trucks, but I do understand basic mechanics and where most parts are on the truck) When I moved to the front passenger side and moved the wheel by hand it was intermittent but I hear it at the same points as wheel turns. Are any of these noises normal? I'm assuming there is something on the passenger side that maybe the cause of my vibration, whether it's a bearing, CV joint, axel etc... Wheels were both in the same neutral (straight) position when I turned them. I'm thinking that there has to be something up front that is causing my issue because it's mostly isolated to the steering wheel. Also as mentioned before the tireshave been RF balanced several times and have 7,000 miles on them. The rear tires are new because the dealership deemed them bad because they were unable to balance them. -

Yeah its a real bummer. I really like the Silverado and I always wanted one. I'm still holding on at this time for a solution but if the dealership "can't find anything wrong" I would have to take on matters in my own hands. Which means burning money that I didnt intend on doing. I wish I had more more knowledge of vehicle mechanics. I've read this entire thread but I keep posting my updates to see if anyone else has any suggestions. -

I thought at one point that my truck rode better with weight (full tank or weight in the bed) but now I feel it all the time. Update from my visit with the dealership. They removed the cover plate from my rear diff and did a thorough inspection of the gears. Took measurements and stated that they were all way below the tolerances that GM specs. So that's good. They greased all parts in the driveline according to a service bulletin and took it on the road with the vibration analysis meter. tested it everywhere from 30-77 MPH and sent the reading to GM. Supposedly GM stated that my truck is the smoothest they have seen and that there is nothing wrong with my truck. That being said I still feel my steering wheel vibrate going down the road. What sucks is I took a new truck for a ride and it was 10x worse than my truck. The plastic on the seats were shaking around and I felt like I was on rumble strips. Idk what to think at this point. After looking at the EVA it appeared that the most vibration was seen on T1 (wheels, tires I think) but according to GM it was within spec. At 70 MPH I think it stated 23 (I believe it's in hz right?). Everything else seemed to be in the single digits and very low on the bar graph. Sorry I don't have the specifics on me at this time. The dealership is keeping the work order open since I having them go for a ride with me next week. Does any of this seem to make sense? While the tires or wheels are within GMs spec, is it still high amount of vibration? I feel defeated that they can't find anything wrong with my truck and I feel worse now that I've tested a new one with 20 miles on it and it was so much worse than mine. Maybe the hub assembly on mine is bad too? -

Day 2 of driving the loaner and it shakes as well. I feel like I'm going crazy. At least this one doesn't shake as bad. Seems like when you get on the highway it will shake at first and then smooth out. Nice to not have my hand numb after going down the road for 15 minutes. Dropped off my truck this morning at the dealership. Very good experience so far with them. Had the tech go for a ride with me and he noticed some vibration as well. The loaner driver 10x better than my truck. It does have some AFM vibes but I can live with that. Now it's just a waiting game for me. Hopefully I'll have good news to report soon. This is my third visit to the dealership. Last two have been balancing. This time they will be measuring the vibrations and look for other issues. -

Mine is EXACTLY the same. I'm also thinking that this is related to the rear end. Low 50s this morning and it seems to be less noticeable in this weather. I'm also experiencing vibration between 35-45ish. I also notice that when coasting and tension is off the driveline and then adding even very minimal acceleration l, there is noticeable clunk from the rear of the truck. Something must be loose or the rear diff is having some issues. I have another appointment on Tuesday. I really hope to get to the bottom of this. Always wanted a GM truck and I didn't want this as my first experience with GM -

Anyone else notice that a full tank of gas and slightly colder weather improved the vibration? I'm beginning to think that mine be related to the rear drive shaft, diff or pinion angle? -

I've been trying to find your other posts to put together your experience but I'm having trouble finding them. Could you please elaborate more on what you were experiencing and how you concluded that it was the wheel bearing that was bad in your truck? -

You took the words right out of my mouth. Two hands on the wheel and it drives really well. Driving with 1 hand, I'm about to lose my mind with the vibration even though it's minuscule. I wish I could drop the coin to try out new tires but it's not in my budget at the moment. Also I feel like I vibes more when in AFM (V4). I just went on a 30 minute drive and it feels like I'm getting steering wheel vibration at most speeds. If you buy new tires please post if it helped or didnt. I think we have the exact same issue. 2016 Silverado LT double cab 5.3L -

Could a few of you give more input on how much vibration you're experiencing? I started out with my center console shaking to the point where water was splashing around at highway speeds and my passenger headlight flickering. After 2 visits to the dealership and having 2 tires replaced and all road force balanced I'm only experiencing minor vibration in the steering wheel. It's it even worth it to make it absolutely smooth? How sensitive are these trucks to road imperfections? I feel like I might be being too picky. I mean it is a truck after all, not a sports car? -

I don't see how they can charge you. I just had two replaced and all 4 road force balanced. Plus the front 2 re-road force balanced after I still was experiencing vibration. I left the dealership today and I'd say it's 98% fixed. I maybe just looking for it so much now that I don't know what fixed even means anymore. I swear I'm paranoid about the issue now, especially after reading this thread lol
