About Me

I have read various articles on how best to extend the life of a transmission. It is a popular consensus that heat is the big destroyer of that unit. the next problem is not changing the tranny fluid often enough. I do not believe that a transmission should operate at temperatures approaching 200 degrees, to my way of thinking that is creating programed transmission failure. I own a 2018 1500 silverado with a 6 speed MYC. I am disconnecting the main problem maker, a thermostat mounted on the outside of the transmission. It is a simple procedure of opening the thermostat housing & reversing the sensor inside. Now the fluid flows continuously keeping unit at least 30 to 40 degrees cooler. I am disconnecting the transmission lines entering & exiting the cooler & routing them to a new cooler in front of the radiator which has 2 elect fans that push air at 1000 cfm & are controlled with a switch inside the truck when needed. I tow a camper so that is the reason for the extra cooling.I am also installing a external spin on hydraulic oil filter that has the ability to filter out damaging particles that are not caught up in the internal filter. The transmission torque converter can become damaged if operated below 160 degrees so i will monitor that closely Depending on the use for towing or regular driving the external spin on filter will be changed at 15,000 mile intervals. It has been said that if the torque converter does not lock up it can result in a loss of fuel mileage, that is of minor concern compared to a strong & healthy transmission
