I used to work at a Chevrolet dealership for a few years and trading could be good or bad. Good if you're upside down and you get something with rebates that will eat up some of your negative equity. Ideally, dealers want to make money 3 ways (with the trade in buying it below wholesale which is a shitty back and forth with their sales desk, they try to make money on the rate of the loan, and lastly the vehicle they are selling which includes the vehicle itself and all the extra BS products they try to add). It depends on how much you owe. If you own it outright and want to get rid of it fast then Carmax gives the most money for vehicles compared to regular dealers. There is a wildcard scenario though that you can take advantage of if you're lucky. Dealers compete with other dealers within their area. If you go on the last weekend of the month or even the last workday of the month they might do what we call in the car industry "pull their pants down " and give you a ridiculous deal just so they can make their sales goal and be on top. Sometimes they hit their money sales goal early in the month that they can do loser deals the rest of the month to be top volume dealer for the month as well. Sometimes though they haven't met their money sales goal and the situation can be different. Use your judgment and SHOP AROUND dealers and make them compete. Don't be afraid to show quotes from other dealers. Whatever you do don't commit right away until you're ready. Salesperson will try to get you to commit right away by asking questions such as "if I can beat the other dealers price do we have your business today only?" Good luck!
