  1. Got the document .. thanks... it will come in handy at the next dealership visited. The one I bought the truck from is still quoting I need do the consumption tests..
  2. Thanks Hillbilly4u... on my 2nd consumption test different dealer (60 miles away). The trick with GM right now for me is it is not using enough oil right now. Only a quart per 2000 miles. By my calculations since I've owned the truck since new, now have 93K on it and its didn't start using a drop until 70K is I will be using enough for some work done by 120K or so... unless it ramps up in the next 7K miles sounds like I'm on my own since GM will have 2 consumption test records showing "it is within specifications" before the warranty runs out. The glass half full thinking is I get to get it fixed right the first time by a mechanic I trust (and using the awesome info folks have posted on this forum), the bad news is I get to pay for it, but its still cheaper then trading in for a new truck with new unknown problems and I really do like this truck. Not upset just disappointed in the way large corporations seem to be treating repeat customers.
  3. Thanks.. I have been a good student and looked at the multi step fixes GM has. But if I'm footing the bill out of warranty and paying a mechanic would it not be cheaper (less labor) to get a crate motor plopped in instead? Which has all the parts fixed? I've never agreed with the way they fix it under warranty and still can figure out how its cheaper for GM to have 6 dismantles of the various parts on the motor and replace just a few of the defective parts. Seems labor intensive (and also irritating to the customer with all the visits to finally get it fixed). Don't you end up with a motor that has a few new lifters and few new pistons and rings after 12 or more visits to the dealership (counting the oil consumption tests)? I have never rebuilt a motor that was consuming oil that way even when I was a starving teenager.
  4. Good idea... I have a mechanic I trust that could drop in a crate engine hopefully with out the AFM (I don't like it even if its not the cause of the oil consumption) and a custom tune that ditchs all the delay throttle, shifty trans, TQM stuff the stock computer has and I should be good to go. Solves the only 2 complaints I have had with the truck... well OK the dual temp controls are a stupid design, but I can live with that till 200K miles
  5. It varies... in the last 25K miles I have had it use 3 quarts in 4000 miles... GM did the oil test (after they did the oil change and filter, which I was told was a requirement for the test) and this go around it only used 1.5 quarts per 4000 miles. GM says its normal to have it vary and can us up to a quart per 2000 miles! They quoted it depends on driving style, towing, freeway, weather, temps, brand of oil, etc.. My comments / worries that it didn't use a drop, even with all the variables they quote until 70K and now at 93K its using oil feel on deaf ears. Ditto at the other dealer 60 miles north, they said unless it uses more than a quart per 2000 miles they are "not authorized" to start repairs. I realize these trucks (and the other manufactures) all have problems, but it seems like its always a fight to get GM to fix things that obvious defect. I was told a long time ago "It takes 10 times more work to bring a customer back then it does to keep one" Maybe GM should put up some posters at corporate to remind them that.
  6. I'm in the same boat... Not using enough oil for repairs under warranty, 94K on 2011 Silverado, the miles I put on it I will be out in a month or two. Shame because it didn't us a drop until 70k and now its using it fast. By my calculations it will be using enough for GM multi-step repair process at 110K or so.. I will keep the documents but doubt I will want to (call, pay for it and wait for a check, multiple trips to dealer, nag, fight etc.) to get out of warranty work done. Looked at the 14's while waiting for my last oil analysis check.. Nice truck. Sticker shock! Not a single 1500 4WD truck under $42K on the lot! My 2011 was under $29K with the nice All-Star package.. I guess I'll wonder over to the other brand dealers and see what they have - I'm the customer and I can do that.
  7. Well according to the Dealer and GM.. its not using enough oil for the TSB / Fixes. I explained that it went from 0 oil consumption for the last 70,000 miles to starting to use oil and now at 90,000 miles its using over 2 quarts per oil change (at 30 to 20% life left on the DIC). According to GM it needs to use 1 quart per 2000 miles before they even start work. Close but no cigar..... Time to ask other dealers (60 miles in each direction) and hope they respond better than the local one. At this rate I figure it will use enough oil for GM to do something after 100K miles... which of course I will be out of warranty. Maybe that tray behind front grill is not for a dual battery but for the customer to bungie strap a gallon jug of OIL on for between oil changes top offs. 2011 Silverado 1500 - 93K on the clock
  8. Well it just got serious... Took it in for oil change today and it only had 3 quarts left in the pan with DIC still reading 40% oil life... so looks like consumption just went up. Time to talk to Chevy and start the process.
  9. What is GM's amount of oil consumption before they start doing work? I've heard its changed or is that just rumor. Thinking of doing the tests. The local dealer is not talking and I may take it to another one (100 miles away).
  10. I agree and no I really don't like it "living with it"... but I also value my time working at my job and getting paid, not hanging around at the Chevy dealership jumping through "the GM hoops" to get something fixed in a process that seems convoluted and doesn't values me the customers time. Time value is my problem, my crazy work schedule is mine also, not GM's, they have a process for the fix, I don't agree with it and I have chosen not to do it yet but I may as I am getting close to the end of the drive train warranty, or I may trade it in before that who knows!. I've lemon lawed one truck already (not on oil consumption problems) and my experience was it was not worth the time, lost work, money, fees, it would of been cheaper to trade it in on another truck. But principles drove me to complete that and I paid dearly for it in lost jobs.
  11. 2011 5.3l AFM, Silverado 1500 4X4, 84,000m on it. 1 to 1.5q per 3000m or right around 2q when oil life is at 25%. 70% freeway driving with 500 to 800lbs in bed. 20% off-road mostly gravel roads and 10% towing 4000 to 6000lb toys around. Complained about it couple times and was told it was normal and they I could go through the oil test thing if I like, but I work crazy hours in 4 different towns hundreds of miles apart so stopping at the dealership to do the tests was not convenient. Un-scientific observation is I tend to see smoke out the tail pipe when first started in the morning.... Rest of the time clean, but the cats could be burning it off. Its not just a Chevy thing.. Daughters car since new has burned 1.5 quarts per oil change for 160,000 miles now and is still going strong through 2 teenage drivers, across country college trips, big city driving etc.... same thing, manufacture sent us letter stating it was normal when we complained way back when it was still covered.
